Had to pick up a 2" hole saw, and did, got home and due to it was getting dark I rushed to try and cut the 2" hole and install the compass.  I picked the perfect spot, (Really the only spot available so I guess it was the perfect spot) on the rights side, of the sail mast tube.  Then as I tried to use my 3/8" cordless the hole saw is 1/2" doh...  First mistake.  Run up and grab my 1/2" plug in drill, drop extension cord, run back down to kayak, and placed the hole saw into the drill.  Next mistake is realized.  The hole saw doesn't have the pilot drill!  Just the big round toothed cutting head.  Oh great.  Nothing to keep the 2" round cutting head from WALKING all over the area I was to bore a hole through. :smt013
I give it a try anyway. (Remember it was getting darker by the minute) My drill is not a high speed drill, it's variable, but not that fast.  So with drill spinning at its top speed I slowly try touching the hole saw to the spot on the yak.  A tooth grabs and off it goes down the face!   :smt013.  Next attempt I really brace the drill thinking this will make a difference. Mistake #3  Didn't help one bit, saw bit  catches runs off again!   :smt013 :smt013
Figured it was time to stop while I still have a somewhat smooth area where I want the compass to be.  I need to get a 2" hole saw with the pilot drill bit!   :smt044
I know better, but was hurried and and when I purchased the 2" hole saw I wasn't thinking about the darn thing walking all over the area to bore through.   So I'll get the right bit today, and bore the hole to cover the mess I created last night! :smt010

I laugh because I've been there in the past.

Smart move to stop before disaster. I have made the 'just get it done' move in the past and it always the wrong call.

:smt011 I think I can drill out the little "bear claw" scrapes chewed into the plastic from one of the "Run aways"  otherwise, I'll fabricate some intricate little fib to explain them away! :smt044 :smt044
I'll find out tonight!

Don: What's up with those scratches on your kayak?
CGN-38: I told you! I spent the summer with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines!
Don: Did you shoot any?
CGN-38: Yes, like 50 of 'em! They kept trying to attack my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that?
Don: What kind of gun did you use?
CGN-38: A freakin' 12-gauge, what do you think?

Hit Home Depot and get a mandrel. Not having one is like driving a car w/o a steering wheel.

Mission completed! got the right bit with drill, grabbed my cordless and started cutting the 2" hole until the darn cordless battery died! :smt012  Picture to follow maybe tomorrow.

Finished it off with my normal drill, and got the compass installed.  Didn't cover up too much of the gouges left from yesterdays fubar, but WTH.... :smt044  Battle scars!  I'll wire it up at some point.
