Hello all
I am looking at a pelican castaway and was wondering if anyone has any input on this kayak.I can get one for $400.00 and it seemed like a good deal.I have a OK malibu2 and would like a single seater with more storage then the malibu but I don't have much money to spend and was thinking this might be a good way to go.Any input would be great
Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt - This was my first boat and I loved it. It did great in the local lakes, helped me catch my first hali and even made a trip to Half Moon Bay for Lings. It has decent storage in the front and back but the front hatch does not seal well. If you are in big water ( which I do not recommend) and are taking waves over the front, it will leak. The rod holders are decent and it is pretty stable. I never did put a crate in the back but I did find that I could put a decent sized tackle box in the back that held a good quantity of gear.

This is a fairly short boat that is also wide so you are not going to get a ton of speed out of it but it does cruise nicely.

The seat is decent but be aware that it is a fairly wet ride. There is no scupper in the seat area so the water tends to pool in the area.

I am not sure what type of water you are thinking about fishing in but this yak is not designed for big water but it is great for lakes and the delta. I am sure that it would do great in rivers as well.

I hope this helps.

Russ

Just keep in mind you could get a much more seaworthy boat for around the same amount or not much more used and pre-rigged.
