I grew up on the other coast and know how to bottom fish for flukes and flounder (much smaller versions of halibut?).Being new to the area and having never fished over here, I am looking for for some one who knows the area and doesn't mind spending some time with a newbie  from going down to decent tackle store, to going out.  I don't mind splittings costs or bringing lunch. Between Grad School, National Guard, and work full time I don't get as much time as I would like to spend fishing.  I would have to start off locally, and progress from there as time permits.  I have a lot of freshwater stuff, maybe not for salmon and strippers, but do okay with large mouth and trout.  Drop me a message and I'll give you a call or meet you some place.

Kevin,

Let's hook-up! I'm in Millbrae and Hi's Tackle Box just opened their store in South City. I'm off work every Sunday and Monday - I'll be in touch!

Hey Mooch,

I just shot you an email.  Let me know if you got the time for MLK Day.  I needed to go to HI's anyways so that work out great for me.  I also wanted to recon the Brisbane tubes, see where it is, how to get there, where to launch.

Thanks,

Kevin

hey, Kevin and Mooch -  I am also in the San Mateo area and would love to hook up for a quick water fix.   I look at the San Mateo bridge every day and wonder about kayking and fishing the area.    I know stripers are caught off the bay trail and teh old pier used to be good fishing.   Rays and sharks are always caught from shore.   Something should be catchable by kayak out there.

Let me know if and when you want to make a quick foray out there.   I am usually clear Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Mooch -  it was nice meeting you at the ISE after having exchanged some PM's before your mailbox was lost.   Looking forward to the gathering you suggested.

Flyaker I am game my GF works over by the bridge at one of the Bio Tech's.  I work over in Foster City so I am game for some thing.  I just went down on MLK to recon Brisbane tubes, and the pier at tsing tao (hope I spelled that right).  I am looking forward to Ben Lomand opening up in March.  Mooch, I will try to make it by the store this week.  Maybe the three of us can meet at the store one night?

Flyaker do you fly fish as well?  I have done some, not grreat at it, but love popping for bass and bream, calico bass and the like.  For those of you who just read Calico Bass and thinking to yourself WTF is that?  Up in the North East, Crappie are refered to as Calico Bass, which IMHO sounds better than something a 4 year old flushes...lol

hey, Kevin-

I was really itching to get out on the water this past Sunday, but the bay was really blowing hard and it would have been absolutely miserable in those conditions.   Lets try some other time.

Yes, fly fishing is my first love, but after I started kayaking in 2008, i have been thinking of buying some conventional gear to make kayak fishing a little easier.    I am still trying to figure out what gear i need, so a trip to Hi's would probably do me good.    But, i think the bay in our area is probably shallow enough to fish by fly.

As to Calico bass, we have those out here too, but they are not crappie.   I caught Calico bass down in Newport Harbor last year, along with sand bass, spotted bass, halibut, and mackarel - all on flies.

Looking forward to checking out the bay some time.
