I know what ill wear when i take a yak in the ocean, but i dont think  wearing a 7mm  wet suit on the lake or rivers will be much fun, what do you guys wear  in the flatter water conditions?

I base it on how close to my truck I am, how cold the water is, what other gear I have along...etc.

On the river in the summer it's just boardshorts and the PFD's in the tankwell.

Most fishing excursions involve some kind of wet or dry suit, but some can be pulled off in street clothes.  It depends how much risk you're taking.

I guess I could have been a bit better at explaining my point.  I've never been to Convict lake in the eastern Sierra but a couple years ago I saw a story on opening day there, the water was flat, the lake is big and there was a picture that included a few yakers.  The water had to be in the low 40s if not even into the 30s and I thought wow that's dangerous........

The only time I've been dumped (on a fishing trip) has been in the surf, but someday I know I'll go over far from shore, everybody does, it's just a matter of when. If you read some of the stories you'll find it happens just as much on smooth water as rough, maybe more so because in rough water most people are more aware and cautious.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is dress for immersion in the water you're on regardless of the other conditions.

Up in those lakes regardless of the time of year I wear my waders. If it is blown out I just don't fish. I hate wind up there.

I dress for immersion. This time of year it is a 7mm farmer john bottom, 7mm boots with wool socks and a paddling jacket at the least for me. It could be a life or death decision.
