Well I hit the local discount center today.  I don't find much usually, and really was there to get a cheap microwave for my recent worm casting adventures.  I found a nice Emerson microwave new in the box for 20 dollars, and was pretty happy with just that.  Then I was looking at a rack when my wife pointed out some fishing reels (her mistake).  Hmmm, left handed reels, even better.

I ended up with a brand new Abu Garcia Record 61 with a power handle for 80 dollars, a Abu Revo SL for 20 dollars, and a brand new crab pot for 30 dollars.  I also got some Gatsu jig assist hooks for 75 cents a package!  Fortune smiled on me today I guess.

The lady told me the Abu Revo was a return as it was binding.  It took me a while, but I found the spool was contacting the metal brake in the right side plate, when the brake was tightened down.  I cut a tiny piece of teflon and placed it inside the bearing to lift the spool ever so slightly.  It worked perfectly!  I already tested it, it casts very nicely and is really smooth.  So I got a new Revo reel for 20 dollars and a little time/labor.

I already Tani-ized both reels (Thanks Alan Tani!).  Luckly they already had carbon fiber drags in them already.  I figured the Record will make a nice lingcod/rock cod reel.  It seem very nice and well made.  I have some 6501 reels already, and this reel is much nicer in quality and construction.  The Revo went on one of my bass rods, and replaced an old cheapo reel I had.

The crab pot is a octagon style, about 3 ft across.  It looks like a heavy hog wire which was dipped in plastic dip.  I have been seeing similar traps for 120-150 dollars, so 30 wasn't too bad.  I am sure I will have to put my time back in before finding more deals like these again.

My wife and I are headed to Eureka for her B day at the end of the month.  I might get to try out the new crab pot!

Matt
