Yahoo home page has video of an encounter between a 5 meter gws and three kayak fishermen. One gets knocked from his boat but makes it back in. Pretty interesting. The more I read the more I believe that if you see the shark first then he wasn't going to eat you to begin with.

They were on Hobies just like me. I am going to troll for a big one in my Hobie next year. Angler of the year is nice but I'll have my turbo fins in time for 2009 ling season and I am going to pedal in with a 17 foot gws clamped on my stern. My Hobie carries about 220-240 lbs with me and all my gear. Does anyone know the ride characteristics of an 08' Adventure with a 4,000 gws attached?

yeah, another case of a mirage-drive hobie being pursued by a gws. surprise, surprise. i wonder if it has anything to do with those fins fluttering under the boat.

Total coincidence.  :smt003

Blue-There was an attack a few weeks ago at Tomales head.  You would have to be an idiot to go there in a yak.  Bigeyedave et. al. have had a few encounters there.

I fish some pretty sharky water fairly often.  I gotta say after having an encounter with a 8'6" Thresher, I would not even be scared of any Thresher or any other type of shark except for a GWS.  Threshers mouths are so small & after seeing one swim you realize they are not interested in you at all.  I believe this is true for GWS's as well, they aren't interested in us at all.

I know there was a long-standing rumor/story around Pt. Dume in Malibu about a couple that went kayaking 20 years ago & all they found were their boats, 1 with teeth marks all over it. I believe it was true but other than that is there really any incidence of a GWS doing damage to a yakker?

Yes.  Up here there have been attacks at:

Jenner (OK Frenzy)
Tomales (SIK)
Ano (SIK)
Bean Hollow (Hobie Adventure)

So far noone has been injured, but all of the boats have been damaged.

guess it only makes the news if there's video footage

Exactly my thoughts too.  The video on was on ABC's GMA program this morning.  Yes, all of the guys were on Hobies.  No one (including me) can ignore the coincidence.  :smt087

Hey Blue..... Good to see ya here again.  I hope all's well with you and the family.

I am surprised the kid took it so well.  I would have had a code brown after that ordeal!

We will be hearing more attacks in the future - there's no doubt about that. Just practice your jousting techniques....so when a shark does show up, use your paddle and tip over the kayaker next to you :smt002

Seriously, paddle with a buddy = safety in numbers :smt045

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.
