I'm down for some perchin in the future, tho' I can't do this weekend.

Are you actually perching from the yak? Or the beach?

My back is acting up so maybe next time, but I have done a bit of surf casting for perch off Stinson.  I will definitely join you next time; where do you launch?  Bolinas Lagoon?  or surf launch?  Do you eat them or just catch and release?  What do you use, plastic things?  Lures?  I would like to troll some rapalas deep with heavier tackle and try to hook into a halibut.  They are out there.  Not a lot, but some.

How did the perchin' go?  It has been years since I fished for them, but I just checked out that www.surf-perch.net site, which is devoted to fly fishing for them.  Pretty cool. Now I want to get out the fly rod with my yak! Curious how the fishing was and what species you caught.

Sorry guys, no yak for perchin' just hiking along the beach. THe fish are in so close that yakking would be MADNESS...

I ended up not able to go-- got to clean carpets instead (oh joy + WAF).

Pete-- I've flyfished for them before, even have a home-grown mini-puff fly that i tie for them... 8wt with type IV line and a short leader.
I'm mostly using spinning gear - same thing you would for schoolie stripers. 3/4 or 1oz egg sinker, 2feet of 8@ fluor and a #4 bait holder or worm hook. Then top it with plastic grubs, or berkeley powerbait-- bloodworm is the ticket.
I keep about 2-3 every 5th trip (they're good eating)

Looks like i might get an opening wed or thurs this week, or next Sat afternoon...PM if you're up for it

Finally getting rigged up for surf perchin' on the fly.  Really eager to check it out on some beaches in Mendocino County and see how I do.  Or down in Marin.  Or in Monterey/Pajaro Dunes areas.  I think a good sized barred perch must put up a lot of fight on a flyrod.

And then occasionally a 10+ pound striper nails the thing...

lets plan a trip some time this winter.

The few times I've been out to Pajaro dunes (Right at the south entrance of Sunset St. beach) there has always been a light to moderate wind blowing in my face. How does one fly fish in such conditions?  I picture trying to get the fly started and having it blown back on to the beach.  Mind you, I don't fly fish, but I've seen others do it, and I just can't see how anyone would launch a fly into the wind.....

Just let me know, i'm usually up for a trip to a marin area beach on winter weekends.  Late winter- early spring (late feb) i have ALWAYS seen stipers caught off Stinson by perchers...crazy cause the perch water is like 3-6 feet deep

I was thinking, one cool thing is that Stins never gets hit THAT hard except when the bass are really hitting, and even then it is not that bad.  But really, compared to some of the lakes and rivers, our Norcal beaches are not swarming with anglers.

I would love to throw some flies for perch and bass at Stinson this winter.   I now got the rod, leaders and flies, now need to find my waders...

Those fish are probably actually preying on small perch.
