When fishing for sanddabs from a yak (eg: in Monterey Bay), do you guys just drop the rig to the bottom and then drift? Or do you paddle to counter the drift and try to keep your rig in one spot?

I think I've got the rig worked out; just a sabiki or something slightly bigger, tipped with squid or shrimp?

I just drift with the rig on the bottom, sabiki in the larger sizes with squid

Northern Boy,
Little trick I learned was to add a 1/2oz clip on dipsy sinker (Water Gremlin orange bag) to the top of Sabiki to make it lay flat on the bottom making all the hooks useful not just the bottom 2.
Hope this helps,

I believe that the small sinker at the top of your sabiki in addition to the normal one at the bottom is key. Also, the bigger hook sizes generally catch bigger dabs, and baiting the hooks helps too. I think it's better to drift as little as possible because they're pretty deep and the more you move the harder it is to keep your rig on the bottom. I usually fish for sand dabs in 170'-200' of water, but I've caught them off the aquarium in about 100'-120'.

Right before the can off the aquairium is the ticket in about sevety foot of water, I found that if you add the weight on top of the rig it seems to get tangled A little more often...Those little fish are fiesty and dont seem to have trouble swimming up to the bait...Andy

Good info, you guys.  I think I'm gonna try that off the Noyo.  My question is how do you clean and cook em? They're pretty small, right?

at my farmers market is a guy who sells sand dab fillets.  Frankly, dont see how he does it.  They have more of a slimecoat than scales but I scrape them out of habit as if scaling.  Then gut, cut off the head and pan fry.  Seasoned flour, a little oil.  After they are cooked, you can lift the fillets off.  They can be small, so just eat more :smt001
