Went over to HMB yesterday, met Frank (captainkayak) at the launch. We fished the south east reef down past the red buoy until about mid day but caught nothing, except for some smelt. Tried many different kinds of lures, also frozen anchovies and live smelt, and I think Frank had squid, but could not find the lings. We saw shadows chasing the shrimp flies though so I borrowed a sabiki from Frank and started catching smelt immediately. They bit right away and if you wait a little you'd get more of them. They were mostly around 12" and feisty, fighting four at a time was amusing, and anyway the only excitement we had this trip. Fine weather and a beautiful day though.

Being an honorable sportsman is way more important than what you catch.

Ay caramba. I was sick and spent the day gazing out the window at the beuatiful weather and cursing my rotten luck. You made me feel slightly better!

Did you try using the smelt as Ling Bait? My last HMB ling had a part-digested smelt in it's belly and barfed another one into my lap when I caught it.

  • Do you consider lingcod a filthy animal?

I dropped the smelt back down Mike gave me but no ling takers. The day wasn't a waste though, since it felt real good being on the water.

Mike- Thanks for the company. It was nice fishing with you!

I wouldn't go so far as to call a lingcod filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a lingcod's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Hey fishinmike, it seem the rockfish and lings does not hang around the
same place. Reading past reports from HMB has been off and on.
