Well it has been long overdue...a fishing weekend with my dad in his boat. I decided to leave the kayak at home for the weekend in anticipation of some good fishing and a great time with pops. I was rewarded greatly as we pulled some good fish in and the father-son bonding time was unmatched.

It all started with the presumption I may be picked to sit on a jury Friday as I got the dreaded jury summons in the mail several months ago to report on Thursday. My luck has been that a case will be heard and I get selected and have to return the following day to perform my "Civil Duty", huh!, my civil duty is to fish when I want. I was pleased when the judge entered the jury room and dismissed everyone around 1:30 on Thursday. I went straight to my folks house to help setup the boat for an early launch on Friday.

We launched in Pittsburg around 8:00 AM, a late start for my dad, but he has been enjoying his sleep more these days. We headed to Chain Island and within about 20 minutes my dad landed a 47" sturgeon on grass shrimp, my favorite fish to eat. Yeah!! sturgeon for us all, I mean afterall I did net the thing!! I got quite a few bites that wouldn't stick. By the end of the day (1:30 for us), my dad ended up with the sturgeon and a limit of striped bass, 23" and 24" respectively. Great day for him. I guess my luck, or lack thereof was due to the fact I brought a banana on the boat and ate it. I didn't realize it was considered bad luck until it was too late.

We launched around 7:00 on Saturday and I redeemed myself with a limit of striped bass (around 19-1/2" and 21"), no keeper sturgeon for me. I did harass my dad a little as today he ate a banana he brought and ended up with nothing to show for it. I am usually not superstitious, but there may be something to this banana thing. Anyways, I really enjoyed my father's company and as I mentioned, this trip was long overdue.

Way to go, Raydog!  Great outings like that with your Dad will make for cherished lifetime memories - I'm holding on to mine really tightly.  For me, family times are the Best of Times.  :smt045

On the report details - very nice, and great pics too.  It does seem like Dad's ready for a kayak though!   :smt002

So Pops still schools you huh?  I better take some lessons so I can keep ahead of my sons!

on the banana thing, I have noticed it quite a bit and it may be more than superstition.  At work we were test fitting respirators and the check to make sure we had a good fit was a banana oil compound.  If you could smell it, the fit wasnt right.  Its a strong scent.  So maybe the fish can sense the oils on our hands as we handle the bait?  I dont know but I do avoid them when fishing.

Dale, we definitely plan on getting more blood on that boat in the near future!

Jeff, my dad says Hi and that you are welcome anytime and to hang onto your money. I will let you know when we plan on heading out again. I get every other Friday off and dad likes to go out during the week when it is not as busy. We may be fishing again together on the 21st if not sooner. Take Care.

Yes, I am still being schooled by Pops when it comes to fishing. I will say though, my mom can out fish my dad when it comes to trout. He won't admit it to her but we all know better. I definitely will not be bringing any more bananas with me on future outings.

Thanks guys for the positive feedback and I will definitely cherish these times with my dad forever.

Tight Lines!!
Ray
