Yeah, NWKA got hit yesterday as well.  I finally got fed up and banned about 20 new registrants and their IP addresses too.  One guy re-registered like 3-4 times until I banned his IP.  I also updated the verification image strength.  If it continues to be a problem, I'll just go to manual activation.  Bill, if you have some more stringent methods in mind, do let me know.
