All the thanks to Fuzzytom for winning the Trident for my Daughter(his daughter-in law) We got her out on the BIG BLUE today. Launched out of the Santa Cruz harbour and the four of us paddled over to seal rock. We were approaching Steamers lane when a big bull sealion came up right behind her. Gave her a good scare. He was making a beeline for the rock from the wharf and wasn't interested in us thank god. Other than that we saw a pair of Dolphins and a few Otters. She really enjoyed the break from her studies today. There was a bit of a chop but light winds and not too much swell. The trident is a MAN-SIZE yak as many of you guys already know, but she paddled it very well and even stood up in it. Once she hooks her first Kayak fish, look out. She will be hooked. Im hoping to get her out fishing at least once befroe the season ends. aka-Kimo

I have a trident 15 and love it, Im sure your daughter will as well.

one thing I have noticed is that if the tankwell is empty it weathercocks a lot, even with a 275 pounder like me in it.  As your daughter looks very slim, you may want to consider a rudder in the future.  She will probably be floating like a cork!

what did you mean by weathercocks?

A boat that weathercocks wants to point into the wind, when paddled with the wind abeam. A leecocking boat does the opposite.

This is fairly basic sea kayak terminology, so if terms like broach, chine, gunwale, and weathercock are jibberish to you, then this site http://en.kayakwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page should help.

It is the Trident 15 and yes she does float like a cork in it. Once she gets it loaded with gear I dont expect it will ride much different. It looked like it tracked well but leaving the harbour we were headed straight into a light NW wind and coming back we had the wind behind us. Im sure that any 15 ft yak would be better with a rudder system in the wind. I plan on adding one asap to my P15.

in my case the wind coming from the rear wants to turn the kayak around, so if I paddle evenly on both sides, I keep turning towards the left for example.  When the tankwell in the rear of the kayak is loaded with fish or gear, it rides lower in the water and less area for the wind to push it.  All boats do this to some degree but the trident has a lot of boat above the water, more so for slim young ladies than fat old men like me.

When I paddle a tarpon 160i, I never notice it, but on the trident definitely so.

My P15 does that as well. Im going to get a rudder eventually or possibly add another Yak to the household with one already on it. They are worth having when your out a few miles fighting the wind to get back in after a long day of fishing.
