I am new to the website and I have been looking for a light weight boat for a long time for fishing. I found these Ultimate Tegis http://www.nativewatercraft.com/ult_12_tegris.cfm
at the ISE shows, does anyone own one of these.  I would like to use it for trolling, the sales guy said I should beable to mount a trolling motor on it. Any thoughts...
Thanks,
Joe

Welcome Joe!

IMO: stay away from trolling motors:

- they will affect the kayaks stability
- if your battery dies on you, you'll be paddling back with all that extra weight
- if you flip the yak, think about how difficult it would be to self rescue

Think simple when it comes to kayak fishing - more moving parts - more problems.

Those look cool...but that would be FW only.  You can easily troll in a yak, at just the right speed, by paddling.

Native Watercraft makes a model called the Propel too. It has pedal drive but it has a prop rather than the fins on the Hobie Mirage Drive. Saw it advertised in Kayak Angler mag.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

The thing I like about this boat is that it only weights about 40lbs, I need to put this on the roof of my truck by my self so weight is a factor for me. This is one of the reasons I didn't like the other boats with the built in drives, the hulls on those boats weigh more. My plans for the boat is to use this on lakes that's why I was also want the trolling motor. Any ideas how stable is this boat. Will a trolling motor make these kind of boats that unstable?
Thanks,
Joe

if you want to troll get a pontoon boat, but for a kayak i would keep it simple, i have a t13 and i can put this on my 4runner no problem. i believe that cobra kayaks are lighter, i saw  the native demoed at del valle and it looked out but it was a bare to paddle and was a wet ride and no way for the water to drain, and the price tag ouch, i would rather get a hobie and some new gear instead my .02. oh and i looked at your link sorry i though you wanted the drive one. i would rather get an old canoe for cheep and rig it basicaly the same. and you can rent them at sunrise in livermore.  :smt003

Hi Joe,

I'm going to throw in my two cents worth here because IMO I think you would be making a mistake with this purchase if your planning on installing a trolling motor and battery.

With this type of craft I would stick with a paddle only. Paddle trolling is very effective and it takes little effort to get the right speed.

You should paddle this craft before making the purchase to see if this is what you really want. If your not in a hurry, attend one of the many kayak demo events that will start up in late spring.

You may want to consider a sit-on-top kayak as well. If your open to another style I would recommend something in the line of a Ocean Kayak Scrambler or even the new 11' Trident. Both would be about the weight range you mentioned. There are many quality kayaks out there. Take your time and I'm sure you'll find just the right one.

Good luck
Ben
