I wonder if it's a form of localism

IMO: it's localism....there's really only a hand full of local crabbers that think they own HMB waters. Form the reports I heard lately (and from the past as well)  they usually take your crabs and empty the crab bait  BUT leave the traps behind. Seems to me that it's a sign saying "you're not welcome here" If it was criminalism - they would take everything and leave nothing behind. Unfortunately, there's a little bit of both. I think the Harbor Police should step up and do something about it.

And since it's a small community, I'm sure "they" know what traps belongs to the locals and what doesn't....

my buddy Russ used to crab HMB with his aluminum boat - and he did it consistently enough that the locals left his traps alone.

just my 2 cents....

"Localism"???...... hmmmm :smt017
Hey Mooch.  Don't you live in HMB?
Maybe it's you or your buddies who have been robbing our traps.  Afterall, you're probably the only local who knows, in advance, our crabbing plans and the location of our traps.  :smt040

I don't really care for crabs = too little meat and so much effort to get.....but if you guys were catching lobsters...then that would be a different story  :smt077

I've crabbed at Fort Ross before, but only with hoop nets.  Nada.

I'd like to try it with some actual traps because I find that those Dungeoness crabs can really skidaddle out of those hoop nets if you don't pull them up straight and fast.

There's plenty of deep sandy area out off of the north point in 80+ feet of water.

i have never launched or crabbed at fort ross. i have only jumped off some cliffs on the north end parking on highway 1 and did some great spearfishing for lings and big blacks.

i saw this ling that was close to 4' long there last year this time and have seen it each time i went this year. i am hesitant to shoot it because i think its the same one and it must be female ready to lay eggs once again.

i can dive down and actually lay my speargun next to it to measure it. on occasion i have fed it smaller blue rockfish off the end of my spear. i think that is illegal but its cool to see such a big fish underwater that does not fear much.

this weekend i was gonna go look for it again and thought it might be more fun in the kayak to dive and fish since my wife wants to go.

my favorite fish is halibut. too bad those only come around each blue moon and i am so stubborn i dont want to buy it from safeway! besides, fresh is always the best.

: O )

I just got two of those collapsible crab traps I am itching to try.  Does anyone know if there are any sandy areas farther north around Ocean Cove or Stillwater Cove?
