Got off work at 3 pm and headed to Pt. Richmond with pileworms as the bait attractant.  sabikeed the pile worms for about an hour till I got a 10inch smelt and let him down on my halibut leader.  at around 5pm as i slowly paddled past the green bouee a 21 inch halibut swallowed my smelt.  I had the drag light and the clicker on and didn't know i had fish on.  when I realed up the fish was easily netted, measured, and released. left the water at 7. I was a beautiful day on the water.

Cool, Javier.  A little action is always fun, even if it's a short.  A solo trip has many rewards.

you are right it was fun.  a little action makes it so. but catching bait, I seem to not be so good at it. It took me forever, it seemed, to get that smelt. once i had that smelt I knew it was game on.

Good job - I have yet to catch a keeper this year.

Just a reminder that netting a halibut can easily kill it by cutting the fins and breaking the slime coat, so it might be worth the extra effort to do an in-the-water release...
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Ditto on that Mal2. For me I don't even bother with a net for halibut. It's either no question it's big enough to gaff or if it's borderline, I just lift it in by the leader or use pliers if it's lightly hooked and release in the water. Split the tail with a net and the tail rots in a couple weeks and you killed it anyways... Hate to waste em.  :smt011
