Fished up at the Bean with Kayakito, TallPaul, Rocketman, Great Bass, and Paul (sorry, missed your web handle).
Swell was 6-8 on the forecast. Whatever the height really was, it was a little too big for comfort. At least the wind stayed down. The launch was easy enough with plenty of patience, but the landing was made even more tricky by a low tide that didn't leave much water in the "bean bowl". I think everyone landed safely, but there were some sand packed reels.
Fishing-wise, it was a no-go for me. I caught one big fat...starfish. TallPaul manged a few rockies & an underling, and Paul got a decent china.

Some days its on, some days it isn't.

Goutless Angler rolled up as we were packing things away. How'd you do Mike?

Piscean pretty much summed it up. Sketchy surf, big swells, little wind, cold, foggy and slooooow fishing. Pretty much a skunk for me. Only the company made the day. Good hooking up with the SC boyz and Ramon. Nice meeting Paul (FindThat Fish)the super newbie. Just bought his first yak last week and had his first bean baptism. Still smiling after the lousy fishing and wipeout. Welcome to NCKA!

WTStick it out fellas....and "Welcome to the Madness" FTF-Paul..that's how to start it out right "DIVEstraightINandDON'TlookBACK"....only at the landing.

I saw the forcast and tucked tail into the bay for a couple of days. It's slow(for artificial) fishing all up the coast. So when you get some good fun action...enjoy it like I DO!  :smt004

The landing got me charged up for the rest of the day. I didn't even mind not catching any fish. I think my wife thought I got too much sun when I came home & gave a play-by-play acting like a monkey on crack.

"Dude, and then the surf was all 'ka-boom'! and I was like 'holy s**t' and the impact zone was RIGHT THERE, and we were all like 'uhhh...' and then the whitewater came through, and I was all 'ye-haw'! And we made it!:smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Seriously, there was a split second when I felt like the kayak was going vertical, even though it was probably only inclined by a few feet. Once that sucker wave went under the boat it was "paddle like hell" for the last 20 feet to the beach. Who needs uppers when you can narrowly avoid being pummeled by a four foot dumping BH wave?

FindThatFish did really well. Hey, someone had to get a little worked or it wouldn't be Da Bean we all know.

Great report and way to stick it out.  Remember, you have to break in a new yak by running it through the sand upside down.  Get your wipeouts in early and it's all good from there on :smt009

Greetings and salutations!

I apologize with the delayed response.  Preparing for an overseas trip.  Lots of details to finalize.

Glad to see my fellow NCKA'ers at the Bean.  B-A-R-F and I surveyed the launch and decided that it would be to save the carnage for another time.  We hightailed it south to Pigeon Point.

We challenged the launch by doing it blindfolded.  Paddled out to the kelp and proceeded to work the area.  The swells were a bit too much for me after an hour or so.  Almost had to chum the water with some Chinese food.  Those China cod love it.

B-A-R-F ended up the scoring some tasty treats.  His hail mary drop yielded a nice fish.  He was a good friend and gave me that huge black.  The family devoured that fish and left only the bones for composting.

"Thank you for the fish."

Hi Guys :smt006

Sure was an interesting fishing day at BH. The surf was big and some times it was wave breakers way, way out of the cove, fish all over the place but no bites, at one time I was thinking if it was some thing wrong with my home maid Jigs? or me ? :smt005
for my surprise when we got out we all got stinky with the skunky..... except Paul :smt006 WTG

Was nice to fish with you guys....GB2,PISCEAN,ROCKETMAN,PAUL, and FINDTHATFISH I like that name, welcome to the madness...
Can't way to get back that was my skunk # 3 this year at BH :smt013 can't believe it I though I was pro...

Excuse my late response. Is because I do not have more access
to the internet at work :smt013 I lost the privilege after I came out positive on the abuse of ""ncka"" new stuff...very addictive, once you try it, you hooked like a fish... just can't stay away from it..

scott, thanks for the pic.  i do look like a "super" newbie in it, don't i?!  :smt003

:smt006 it was great meeting you all.  special thanks to steve, paul, scott and one other guy who helped me retrieving my kayak during my first bean baptism (sorry that i forgot your name).

although the fishing was very slow, i enjoyed every minute of it.  i look forward to head back down there for another try...this time without the bean baptism,,,hopefully.

cheers.

Paul -

Nice meeting you. Check out the posts on surf rigging. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,13096.0.html. Sand infiltration of reels takes an hour or 2 to repair or a trip to Alan Tani so I put my reels in a dry bag for launching and landing as do many of the guys.

That surf was as bad as you ever want to go out in so it is all down hill from here.  :smt005 3-5 foot outside breakers and 1-3 shore break is my limit for sure and I was thinking I should have brought my helmet. That 50 yard sprint through the jaws was really something, like Etienne says "makes you feel alive". BTW, that was Ramon (Kayakito) who recovered your boat. He gets a lot of practice recovering my yak when we fish together.  :smt005

that is a very good idea.  it took me about 4hrs to clean the reels.  (i had to disassemble, clean the sand out, grease the parts and put everything back on)x2.  it was tedious and waste of time.  next time i will make sure to put them in the dry bag before launching and landing.

Glad I could brighten your day Allen!

Yep. I stow all reels in the plano box or a dry bag, no matter what the surf looks like. It always seems to be the "no big deal" 1 foot ankle slappers that inevitably catch me off guard.
