I was in a big-5 yesterday, looking for something other than nets, but the store had a few different styles.  One net ($14.99) had a 4' handle, and the "bag" was about 31" deep?  This seemed a little to deep for me.  When I tied the bottom of the net closed, (To make in not so deep) it seemed to make the net more useable to me.
What are the advantages of having a net with a deep net?  Wouldn't it make removing a fish more difficult?  Perhaps on a boat it'd be OK?

jp.  Let's say you have a 44" halibut on the end of your line....

Do you want to try and stuff him into a 20" deep net (or a 31" net), or would you rather try to bag him in a 50" net?  You want the whole fish inside the net.......

Getting the fish OUT of the net is the least of the worries, first you got to get the fish on the boat.

I usually wrap a rubber band or tie a skinny bungie loop on the handle of the net, and tie down the bag to the handle while traveling, to keep the bag manageable when not in use.  You can clear the rubber band with one hand when it's time to land a fish.

Hope this helps your decision.

Thanks SC  I think I'd mess my bike shorts if I had a 44" fish on the other end!   Just realized that I'm thinking of small fish, mainly because thats all I've ever caught.  I guess I have 2 nets, bring the big one when I finally go out on the ocean.  As I've read, 39" to larger is certainly possible out there, so what you answered does make sense.

Thanks
