Last December Patrick and I purchased two ICOM  IC-M34. We always rinse and dry the units completely before recharging. One of the units would not come out of the charger easily so I gave it a little tug and it came free...that's when I noticed "center" contact on the radio had been welded to the charger. I cleaned up the contact thinking it was a corrosion problem. I took look at the second radio and noticed the the same issue. Now after another charging both contacts have completely disappeared. I have contacted Icom and will be sending both units back.
Saturday we met up with Naoaki and I checked out his ICOM IM34............same issue. He has a tiny hole burned int the center contact as well.
Please  check your units and let me know if you do or do not have this "issue".

Sending the two units back today...........will update as I hear from ICOM.

That's a bummer Allen sounds like a moisture issue, they should move the contacts up the back of the battery so the contacts are not the lowest point when in the cradle.

We were afraid of just this sort of thing.....so before charging we rinsed the units. shook out and let air dry hanging in the garage for days before charging.

Can you just plug the charger into the Ext DC plug and not use the cradle?

My battery died and wouldn't charge at all.  Isent it back and they serviced it for free in a week or two.  I don't leave mine in the charger anymore...charge it and take it out.  This is what the manual recommends, but all my others I just left em in the charger and they were always good to go.  Not sure if its compatible with the icom, which is otherwise a great unit.

I like to leave mine 1/4 to 1/2 charged and don't charge it until the night before if the drive is a hour or more I use the 12v charger and charge as I drive. I have a Standard but they say you shouldn't store it fully charged or empty.

Just checked my IC-M88... contacts are fine.  I don't leave it in the charger, and only charge it up the night before I use it.

I just checked ours and they're both fine. If it helps solve the mystery; I leave em uncharged until the night before and then I only do it for a couple of hours.
