Some of my buddies up north have been trying these snares with some success.  Casting them with a surf pole.  They even cast them into the mouths of rivers that have not opened up to the ocean for the year, that's right, in fresh water!  They said the key is bringing a net.  The dungies like to hold on and you can net them before they let go.  Like crawdad fishing when we were kids.  In fact, they say it is a great thing to do with kids.

You can actually see when they are "biting" and there is a technique to "setting the hook" to snare them, but most crabs will just hang on to the bait until you reel them in and net them.

That's pretty cool. I wonder if you could fashion a snare using extra large zip ties so they can't let go, probably not legal I am guessing??
