Salt Point AM 8-16-08

I and my friend Dennis met octopelegiac and abman at the SP parking lot at 5:45 am. We all left to fish shortly after that.The original plan was to padlle up towards Stump Beach and drift back on the almost always present Nw breeze. No. South wind at possibly *knts was already blowing with a SW swell/ wind wave of 2 to 3 ft. and a NW swell of possibly 6ft coming in every 14secs. I managed one keeper ling at 25inches and with the drift going pretty fast managed to lose 3 set-ups. We fished till around 11:30 and pulled the plug.How not disassemble a paddle: never put your thumb on the relese button and while pressing down have your pal twist the other paddle end while your thumb tip is now in the hole. Result a nice chunk now missing from my left thumb the size of a pea. Ouch!Octo was stll going at it when we split so I am sure you will be hearing from him. ABman also dove for a limit at the south end of SP. Water viz in gersle cove was a muddy 2ft but cleared out to 10+ on the outside.

        Stepped out of the truck at still very dark o'clock to a brisk wind from the south. Unloaded the kayak on the very slippery low tide rocks and headed back up to the parking lot to find the others preparing to unload. We headed south against the wind and swell punching through the wind waves it was a bit of a wet ride. With the clouds of bait fish everywhere on the fishfinder I knew it was going to be a slow fishing day.
         Fished in close for a bit catching and releasing small rockies  before heading out to 90 fow where landed a couple nice vermilions, olives and a couple other assorted RF all stuffed to the gills with small baitfish. At one point I counted seven ospreys all diving on fish inside .......they had a banner day plucking fish after fish out of the kelp!  I ended up staying on the water until about one-thirty  and called it a day. By the time the truck was loaded the wind had completely died and the ocean had laid out flat. It was great meeting up with Abman, Dennis and Craig on the ocean.
         Another great day on the water!

Wind could have been less, vis could have been better, But the company was great and it was an excellent time on the water.

Otobe...Thanks a bunch for hooking me up, I expected a paddle and dive only.  That was my first time rod fishing out of my 80# barge of a kayak.  One little copper and one little blue, it was cool.

This is the second time now I have paddled to an area that can only be reached by boat just to find average sized abalone.  I pulled 3 abs on Friday at Fort Ross from shore and 3 abs from Salt Point on Saturday where we paddle well south of any shore access.  The abs at Fort Ross were bigger.  I may need to try that spot south of Salt Point, one more time in shallower water since the thick kelp and swells had me diving in 30'+ water.  With 2-3 foot vis I actually hit the bottom a couple times before I saw it.

Over all great weekend I've met 4 NCKAers now and It's alway a great time with great people.

Looking forward to my next diving/fishing adventure.....Labor Day weekend at VanDamme if not sooner.

Nice work and that the worst WX's i've seen or paddled in up there...you ANIMALS!
