Has anyone fished at San Elijo State Beach in San Diego?  I just got invited to go camping there for a week and wondered if I should bring the yak or not.  I have never fished down south, so i am looking for some experienced advice.

thanks,

Jody

San Elijo and South Carlsbad are both have bluffs with stair access to the beach. At least that is what I remembered so getting your yak down there may be challenging. All the beaches in north county have bluffs with gentle sloping beaches with inside and outside breaks, sometimes 100 yards of surf zone. If you do launch, there are kelp beds and shallow reefs within a half mile from shore with good bass fishing. Stay way clear of swimmers and surfers when you launch and land.

I would bring the yak and launch from La Jolla. Head up to the pier, make bait and head west for YT. Bring a blue and white sumo jr to yoyo, and a rapala cd 14 mac pattern to troll. Check the regs for the closure areas. For a non-surf launch, mission bay is good for bass and halis but the boat traffic in the summer can be brutal.
