I launched at New Brighton @ 11:30, after driving back from Coral st., wind and swell was a bit nasty over there. Capitola had a light wind when I launched, but it soon died down for the rest of the day. I hooked some really perfect size Jack smelt for live Halibut bait. Never had any hits on them so I started dropping swim bait for Rockies. Hooked two underlings and numerous Browns. It was a really nice day on the bay, so I fished until 6pm. Came home with 3 nice size Browns.

thanks for the intel.  Are those lings or a cabezon on the top pic and a greenling on the bottom?  Dont take my word for it, my fish ID is not real sharp.

Either way, beautiful colors!

Eg2 ,you might be right as far as them being juvy cabbys, im second guessing myself on their identity. Usually cabby have a bigger, broader head and thicker pectoral fins, but when they are smaller it harder to tell.
take care, Kimo

Yep, have to agree with J on this one.   Both of those fish are cabezons.  The second one being a really pretty red color morph.  I think the bit where you were able to pick one of them up with your thumb in it's mouth would have been a good identifying characteristic.

That red one is neat, I've never seen one like that.

Beautiful cabezons!   :smt007  Besides the soft pectoral fins and bristly bar of small teeth, the frilly little antennae-like things over the eyes will ID them.  Cabezon are awesome fish.

Thanks for the report and great pics.   :smt001

Thank you for the tips on identifying the cabbies from the small longs. I stand corrected. Much appreciated, Kimo

sc x factor caught a red cabbie that was brighter than a vermillion.

would not have believed it if I didn't see it with my own eyes.

Cabs are just like comileans the can change color to match there invirment for camo. I have seen one change from dark gray to white and back to red on different color surfaces..
