Hey everyone,

It's about time I got active with ncka and I thought I'd start by offering up my secret halibut bait.

I've been using the Berkley Gulp Bait Swimmers with great success.  I troll for halibut w/ a dodger gulp combo with an octo treble hook stinger.  On my boat this bait outfishes tray bait most of the time.

I've also caught striper, rockies and salmon with the bait.  I would definetly recommend having a bag w/ you in case you run out of bait or want to skip it all together.

Good Luck and i'll be fishing the reefs around pillar and montara in the future if anyone is around.

I have a bunch of those I picked up for a dollar a package last year.  I've passed out a few packs, and I'll keep a few extra in the truck in case I run into anyone else who cares to try em.

I've never used those ones, w/ that tail they look like they have no action.  I'm just used to the knob tailed ones I guess.
Good luck and tight lines.

How'd you get them for a buck a pack?  Are you sure they are the same thing.

They are the same as the pic Tok posted.  Sports Authority blew out a bunch of tackle at the end of summer last year.

NICE!!  One of those, "right place at the right time" deals.  Love it when it happens, just seems like it doesn't happen often enough for me.  :smt012  :smt003

So how do you rig such a bait?  Leadhead?  Like live or dead bait? Nose hooked?

I went through the nose all the way then hooked it in down by the tail.

I tried those on a deep drop-shot bungee rig last season for rockfish. I caught some fish, but did way better with the mega-bait jig and swimbaits....

I just use them as you would a fresh or frozen chovy. Except no brining or ice needed. I usually use a stinger or sliding dual hook rig, that creates a roll in the bait.  Tighten it up and it rolls fast, loosen it up and you get a slow roll.  I like that you don't have to worry about flared gills, too soft baits, or inconsistent size. What really sold me is that often you can fish on one bait, they are pretty durable.  And when I'm done, I can put the bait back in the bag for another day.

It'll still have more action than a senko...

yea i used both the gulps and the live chovie by storm and will have to say that the gulp has no action ,on the other hand the chovie (storm) hit well.I hooked up an 8 lb butt over in the flats on a 2knot drift.
