I'll be headed down towards the SLO area for a week, June 21-29.

Is there anyone in the area that would like to show a rookie on the Big Blue how to rock fish?  Not sure if I'll bring my yak or rent one for the day-trip.

How is that area for RF?  Are there some calm flat areas that are fishable, or do I need to brave bigger swells?  I'd prefer flat, since I get motion sickness easily.

Thanks, any help would be good.

PJ, Littoral, Dogpound and Rustic Andy are the NCKA guys in that area. The easiest launch is leffingwell landing on Moontone beach in Cambria. If you go south check out the MLPA border http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa/pdfs/ccmpas/cambria_chart.pdf. Don't miss the chicken pot pies at Linns in Cambria. Muy bueno. Avila also has a protected launch and decent hali fishing. Watch out for the offshore winds there, of course you have a Hobie, so not a problem.  :smt005

Cambria has some really great fishing.  Lately you really have to look for them with your fishfinder.  Last year you could drop anywhere and expect to catch a lot of fish.  Lost of big reds and lings out there.  If you've never been, just go Moonstone down past the hotels and when you see a small golf area on the right and a little bridge its right there.  The people at the gas station are really helpfull also.  Swim baits with a light blue top and translucent body really work well in the area.  Also mega-baits are great. The fish in my picture are from Cambria, but I like to drive north and just get out somewhere.  That's been really great for me.  Three weeks ago I caught eight reds around seven or eight pounds each.  Also five keeper lings and one short.   Email me if you want to hook up.  I have and extra kayak also.  Andres

I'm also heading down that way with the family July 11-19 and would like to hook up with a local at least one day that week.  I have enough WAF points to take the kayak this time around.  Will be setting up camp in San Simeon the 11th and driving home the 19th. Just about any day in between I'm game.

Thanks for the invite Andres...I will e-mail you if I can work it out.  It would be nice not to have to bring my Hobie.

I will be in Cayucous from June 23rd-27th.  This will be my maiden voyage in my own kayak.  I have rented a couple of times and fished the closest kelp beds near Cayucous.  I did manage to catch a few rock fish.  When I get more comfortable, I will paddle out a bit further.  I am curious about Leffingwell.  Is the area closed to fishing now?  I have fished from a private boat just south of Cambria and have seen kayakers there.  It is a great area to fish.  Where are those guys launching to get to that area?  I am usually north of the Pier in Cayucous.  The surf entry there is not bad most of the time and you can rent kayaks there.  Would love to hear how everyone does.  Please leave of post of your results.

Thanks,

Mike

Leffingwell is A great place to launch, you can still fish there, search the archives and you'll find the northern boundry of the cambria mlpa, which is approximately two miles south of leffingwell.  if you want to stay closer to cayucos get on hwy 1 north aprox 1 to 1.5 miles then  pull over in the dirt parking lot with the windmill, theres a path to the beach, a good place to launch. ( cart highly recommended).  I will be fishign Leffingwell on Sat or Sun.  I'll post Fri Nnight which day I'm going.

Anyone fish around Cayucous or Cambria?  How did your trips go?  I will be launching off the beach in Cayucous near the pier from July 5th thru the next weekend.  What has the fishing been like in the kelp beds?

Thanks,

Mike

I snuck in a few trips to the pier in Avila, and used a sabiki(?) rig to catch mackeral.  I should have brought my kayak, as the water inside the harbor was very doable.  I saw two smaller sized hali's brought in, one from a pb and one from a Hobie Outback.  I saw some kayakers fishing kelp beds and rocky points in Pismo.  I talked to some of the commercial guys, and they were bringing in some big buckets of fish: plus one guy had a 17 pound ling brought too.  Not sure how far out they went to get the fish.

Anyway, I'm back in the Central Valley to my home waters in the delta.

I am back in the valley also.  I live in the Fresno/Clovis area.  I might actually fish the Delta on Tuesday.  How has the frog fishin been?  I will let you know if I do any good out of Cayucos.  I can't wait.  Hopefully the surf won't do me in.

Top water has been great.  Frog bite is just starting to get hot.  I'll post a report by the 3rd.
