Went to see my brother-in-law who lives only ten minuets away from Scott”s Flat Lake so I just happen to have my kayak so I decided to give this vary nice looking lake a go. I started trolling for trout 8 feet down in 40 foot of water using a orange rooster tall and caught this 14 inch small mouth  and one other witch was to small for a photo. I got lots of hits but could not get a trout to stick around, the wind came up around 11am decided to head home it was a nice place and a nice paddle.

Nice looking lake and smallie--although the color does seem off, maybe pale or yellowish.  Was the other one you caught the same color?

Hey there dad
Good looking smallie you got there,  had I known you were going up there I would have meet you there. Been in Sac for a few days but going back to the mountains tomorrow taking the yak for some portal and Huntington lake action :).

Could be that smallie came up from deep water recently. Bass tend to lose there color when they are deep or deprived of the sunlight.

Post spawn males(stressed) and suspended smallies are often that color. I would say that was a post spawn fish by the flat belly and the worn fins.
I've been there a few times but can't camp there due to their no dog swimming rule nice lake though.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Ive fished it hundreds of times and had NO idea there was a no dog swimming rule....those speciesist!!!! Neither did my 2 labs. Nor would they care even if they knew. I geuss they are a lil strickter at the campsite. At the right time the smallie bite can be HEAVY. Usually in the pre dawn and post dusk, and especially after a trout plant..rite at the launch ramp...If you want trout, paddle up to the intake creek. If you want lunker bucketmouth, throw something large at overhangs/undercuts/structure on the bank, in the narrows leading up to the intake, where you feel a temp break going from "sierra stream cold" to "lake warm", on the warm side. Ive heard there are coho near the dam wall...never targeted them..If you want truly trphy size Browns, fish the intake of lower Scotts Flat res(about 10 min down the hill)., super early or late,....in the early season...late feb to early may. SFR gets heavy wakeboard traffic, but there are no pb on the lower lake, but less fish....stop in and get supplies from Mark and family at the Rainbow Mart on the highway...they have the most incredible home made food for the hungry angler. Basic gear available.Vastly expanded hours since Mark took over a few years ago....Hes a fisherman and may have da poop if ya ask..
