went down at hi tide (4 p.m. -ish?) with a grub and the new 10.5' perch cannon. my wife came to try her hand since she's seen me hook some bsp's a few times (how hard can it be?  :smt002), and of course invited my two boys too. more people on the beach (yep, some of them in those "bikinis",  :smt007) than was good for fishing, and either the south swell is finally showing or some of that big NW windswell is making it around the corner. I think it is the former cause there are big gaps between the sets. means I should surf tomorrow morning if I can drag myself out of bed! been stiff in the mornings, and not in the good way,  :smt010

finally I am fishing in crocs and shorts. which by the way isn't so bad, but not so good either. :cold

so conditions are not really appropriate for family fishing, but anyways, I hook up immediately on a gold flecked motor oil (alien's choice, but they have never worked for me before; I like the red and green flecked 'perch power'), and it's a larger specimen. not huge, but not a standard issue 8"-er either.  my 8 year old reels him in. I'm on a school and hook another next cast, and my 10 year old reels that one in, but it comes off right in front of us (no biggie, we are releasing), then a third and my wife reels that one in. all are bigger fish that are doing some pulling in the bigger surf.

my eight year old is all fired up now and is trying to cast the 5.5" rod I rigged for him, but the surf is too big for him. the wife is trying to get him to stand down, but he's determined to hook one. Fun to see him all fired up like that, he's definitely a future fish killer (he has stated his current goal as wanting to catch something other than a trout). my 10 year old is a fish eater,  :smt005, happy to let others do the catching. he's goofing with a baitcaster with a casting plug, no hooks.

I catch a couple more slightly smaller ones, then we elect for tactical retreat from the crowds and big surf. checked my hook (a basic #8 mustad bronze baitholder de-kirbed and de-barbed with some plierrs) on the way back and it had dulled significantly. I started with a freshly sharpened hook, but it doesn't take much to dull a cheaper mustad hook. on the other hand, they sharpen easily, and bend without breaking, and are cheap.

anyways no pics but a fun mini outing.

John your outing reminds me of the ones I went on with my father and grandfather.  :smt003 :smt010

Making memories and getting kids hooked on a potentially lifetime urge to go chase fish! :smt002

I've hooked into some monster bsp at sea bright and black's beaches.  I really miss living in SC.  WHY OH WHY DID I LEAVE?   :smt009  Oh yeah, there weren't any good biotech jobs there. :smt012
Good luck and tight lines.

For not getting out of bed early you seem to be doing pretty well. Next weekend We'll have to hook up and try for some flat ones. I did pretty well today as well. My step daughter got her ticket out of high school. Big party here with a big fish feed. All limeklin fish have been consumed.

That's Good Times, John.  The kids being involved kept me riveted to the report.  Love the enthusiasm.   :smt001

Hey J.

It's been a long time since I've gone out and did some perching. But glad to here you're still out grubbing the bsps.

I'll have my chance to walk on the beach of Monterey Bay this weekend since I'll be on Vacation :smt003

Thanks for the report.

You know I was gonna bitch at you for no pics but what a cool report. Awesome to get everyone into the action. Good on you for making the hand offs and getting the fun factor up there. Must of been awesome to see the kids light up when the BSP's took off and when you landed them. Very freakin cool J. BTW, get out and surf.. it keeps us from growing old. :smt001

Z, if it makes you feel better, bitch away,  :smt002. yeah, it was nice to be able to hand off a fish to everybody that day.

I surfed this morning,  :smt007 south swell a little flattened from that wind, but still good. tomorrow is probably even better I'm sure but I'm back in the valley doing the money-making thing for a few days.
