Alright this is a question for all of the five-star generals. What is the best type of anchor? Might be a redundant question, but I haven't found an answer after scouring the boards. I plan on using the anchor for Delta Sturgeon as well as anchoring in SF Bay for monster Sevengills and Leopards. I won't be doing much river drifting (yet :smt002) so I think the pyramid style is out. Now the real question: 3# Folding Grappling, 2# Bruce/Claw, or an 8# Mushroom anchor? I think the Mushroom style won't grab enough to keep me still.  I do plan on using a short length of chain to help set my anchor. Also, what type/diameter anchor rope do you use, and any feed back about a bungee snubber to lessen the effects of chop. Thanks in advance for the feedback! :thumright:

I use a 3lb folder with some chain, but a straight 5lb. would be good also. It has held fine in a ripping tide on the bay and in the sloughs, and hasn't been hard to release. I haven't tried a bungee, it seems the small line I use has enough stretch.

I'm a 5# folder as well, the key is making sure you have enough line to get the right angle-- at least 5:1 (five feet of line for every one foot of depth).  I'm totally paranoid so I go about 8:1, which has held in even the biggest tides in the slot off rat rock

10#s- now you're talking!  I used to have a five pounder with 3 2# balls zip tied to it, but when i finally realized that i needed more line, then i dropped (literally) the balls.
I'm 1/4" rope as well- no chain

I checked Hook1 and they only have 3.5' folders. Is there a sponsered site that has 5lb'ers?

Thanks,

Rich

We finally settled with both a 3lb and a 5lb folding anchors coupled together in tandem.  When the tide is ripping we use both ......when it's slack one is unhooked and stored below. As far a Bungee... check out the "anchor trolley installations" in the search engine.
Using both the combined weights  we can leave our rudders in the water and maneuver side to side to locate ourselves over a specific point, such as the deepest part of a trench.

Have fun figuring it all out...........Allen

This is all that I use for my quick release anchor. It is called a navy anchor.
I don't have a formula for how much line I let out. I let it out until it catches then add a few more feet.
The faster the current the more line you need to let out.

I bought an 8lb mushroom a couple days ago. My son and I used it in San Francisco Bay yesterday and it held us solid. We were in a triple with over 400 pounds of men and gear. The tide was pretty slack so I don't know how it would work in strong current. The good thing about two guys in a yak is you don't need a trolley. I ran the anchor and my son fought the fish.
