Fearing epic arm fatigue from all the fish at Stillwater :smt003, I opted for a quick trip out of the SC harbor. Remembered hearing somebody far, far wiser than I suggest trying for halibut on the inside edges of the kelp. Sure. Why not? Paddled out in a light-medium fog at 8:00 towards Pleasure Pt. The swell was consistent at 3 feet with occasional sets pushing up to 5, maybe 6 feet... oh bugger. I was ill prepared with a trolling rig better suited for the quiet bay flats. Had one heck of a time trying to keep the bait near the bottom. One kelp forest - nada. Two kelp forest - nada. Three kelp forest - fog breaks and I can see the outline of Capitola. Whoops, too far! Switched up things to drop a scampi jig in a pothole hoping for a hungry rockfish (I would have settled for a mentally challenged, blind, deaf, slightly malformed fish). Nope. But alas, it was time to go. Out of the water at 11:15. Special thanks to the vessel assist folks for blowing out of the harbor at full tilt and testing the stability of my li'l navigator. Never in doubt, but I would hate to take it broadside. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some humble pie to get to. :smt022

Good try and thanks for the 411.

I'll bet it was still fun just getting out.  I know it beat the yard work I did   :smt001
Good luck,

Pete

good try. if you can catch fish there, you qualify as a good fisherman. all you have to be at stillwater is a "winder",  :smt002.

not that I don't mind windin',  :smt003

Cool report, gelbyak.  How many miles you logging out of Santa Cruz Harbor to fish at Capitola?

People pay good money for that amount of quality exercise. Think what that gym membership would would cost and be happy.

Abking, it was tough to dead reckon through the fog, but I couldn't have been too far around the point (approximately the first arrow to the left in the posted aerial photo). It was a 35-minute motivated paddle back to the west side harbor launch. My first time with a new werner paddle, so I haven't honed my distance judgment yet. Nice paddle though. I definitely enjoyed the day.

the harbor mouth at SC seems to have its share of boaters that cant wait that extra 30 seconds to clear the channel before throttling up.   :smt011
Glad you didnt go swimming with all the fish in the water that just laugh at all we try to get them to bite!

Good on ya for trying gelbyak.
I was out there 6/8 as well, just about the same time, but went the opposite direction. The fog was just enough to hamper vis, but not enough to slow down the PBs. With the swell up I brought only the wave witch & did fitness paddling between the wharf & harbor using the swim buoys as a guide. Passed an outrigger crew doing the same thing! Sure did feel good to get out on the water.
