Greetings, everybody. This is my first post. I've been lurking for a while, educating myself about kayaks before making my purchase. I'm looking for an ocean capable yak to take with me on the surf/camp/fishing trips I make down to Big Sur. I'm planning on going to the demo day at Outback to get a good idea of what would suit me. I thought everyone would enjoy this surfline video of Mark Healey (famous big wave surfer who lives on Oahu) talking about his first encounter with a Tiger shark while while out spearing wahoo from his yak. Surfline videos start with a short commercial, bear with it as it is a pretty interesting look into what separates the adrenaline junkies from the rest of us.

Love the website, there are definitely some chargers in NCKA,
John

Crazy story. I love how he's so matter of fact about it all. "Like, so I paddled for a mile and started diving again." WTF?!?! :smt003 It sounds like a big puppydog that just won't leave him alone.

Oh yeah, welcome kahawai! :smt004

Yeah, not to mention the start, "I was swimming dragging my kayak with a stringer of fish in the water..." I guess he was towing his kayak to keep in shape for surfing.

A Zeelander would know what a Kahawai is, no?

This Zeelander is from the origins of the name, as in the southern portion of the Netherlands: Zeeland. But loving NZ! Have heard of the Kahawai though. Heard it's a hell of a fighter.

Aaah, yes. The Abel Tasman connection. You're the first person from the original Zeeland that I've met. Kahawai are a lot of fun on light gear. I've rowed through massive schools of them in a tinnie, would be even more fun in a yak. Good chance of a much larger kingfish lurking under the school as well. Thanks for the welcome.

That guy is too much! I would have been out of the water after the first glimpse. Ever since a friend lost half his hand to a Tiger on Maui while I was also in the water, I have been VERY wary about them. They don't seem to have much fear of humans. That guy was right to poke it. That's what turtles do to avoid getting munched. One bite on the gills and the Tiger is out of there.

Mark Healy is a freakin madman.  I don't remember if it was transworld or Surfing magazine had a road trip through Baja story and dude was riding bulls at a mexican rodeo in boardshorts and flip flopps.  He's my hero.
