Noob question; where do I get a "game clip". None of the fishing stores seem to have them? Are they for divers or something?

I've seen them at a few dive shops but I bought mine online from Hook 1.  Unfortunately ordering online eliminates the whole instant gratification thing but if you can't find them anywhere else it's not a bad way to go.

They're at dive shops or you can follow Pacifico's advice and order one up from Hook 1.  I bought one from them too and it works just fine.

The deal about going into a shop, you can play with them and see if it suits your needs.  When I was in LA I went into a local dive shop and they had one that was bigger and opened up easier.  The sacrifice was the clip was made with a thinner gauge of wiring.  I've seen them in the dive shop at the Sports Chalet in Pleasanton.

Once I got my game clip I sharpened the business end (where the point that goes through the mouth/gill plate) following Mooch's advice.  It doesn't have to be hook point sharp but sharp enough to get through a fish's gill plate without snagging.

I would recommend having two clips, one for your main stringer and another free one for that big ling or halibut you need to immobilize before it shakes the hook or jumps out of the net.  Tears are sometimes shed over the big one that got away from not having that extra game clip.
My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.

also be sure that your game clip is secured to the boat, with a big brass clip.  Smaller plastics can break and few things more heart breaking than watching a beautiful stringer of fish float away after a surf crash landing, when the plastic clip snaps.

Mr. Boy from the North,

I too got my game clip from Hook 1. I received it 2 days after I ordered it. It is tethered to my crate behind me with the 3 foot leash, brass clip, and I can easily reach behind me and within a couple seconds, its ready and willing... :smt002

Besides securing the game clip to the yak, I also have a sliding float (a small crab float) attached to it just in case I drop it if it's ever unsecured :smt002

Gary -

I agree for rockfishing 2 clips is easier than 1. I ordered my game clips from hook 1 and decided to get both the larger and smaller clips. The larger clip has a nice padded handle and a sharpened point. The smaller clip comes with a blunt point which needs to be sharpened which is a little challenging when all you have is a Dremel.  :smt013 As always, great service from the Hook 1 folks.

If you are only getting one and will be fishing rockfish, get the 18 inch. If you are fishing freshwater, either will work.

Definitely get at least one big clip and take two with you, they can fill up fast with just a few fish. This is a large clip with a cabbie and 2 rockies. The rubber handle is a lot easier on your paw too.
