Hey Everybody,

Have to drive down to SC to work on my dad's rentals.  Earlier than morning though I'll be working the kelp beds for more halibut, rock fish, lings, and maybe even a WSB.  Hope to get there around 9-10ish, working the right side kelp beds first.  If anyone wants to meet me out there, please do.  Radio station 69.

-Eric
Good luck and tight lines.

I haven't had much luck in that area this year.
Maybe you have a little more knowledge.

I have tried trolling with swim bait (chovie) and squid, jigging in the beds with shrimp flies and trolling with a halibut rig, nothing...

I will entertain another trip, may see ya there if my fishfinder shows up today and I get it installed.

Woot!  I was thinking the same thing.  Did a lil' recon session yesterday to take some picks and plan an outing to capitola.  Forgot to bring the camera to work, or I would post some pics now.  Maybe when I get home then...  I spoke with Ed, I think the owner of the bait shop, and got some good tips on logistics.  I was wondering where the hell to park, and what the rules of launching were.  Apparently there is a ridge up and to the left, overlooking the pier that you can park at for free, since all the spots close are 8a-8p and 2-hour max parking.  You can launch off the pier, drive slowly to the end, unload and the re-park up the hill.  Bait shop opens at 6:30, but Ed says he is there usually by 6AM.  Launching off the pier looks easy as pie, but so does the beach launch too.  Nice to have both options!

Oh, and what got me really jazzed was the pics of White Seabass that he had from about a week ago.  Bait hasn't been showing up too much in recent days, but says it should be flooding the area soon.  One Halibut was caught right before I got there, around 1PM.  I took a pic of the board, showing all the recent catches.  Seems a lil' slow, but some nice catches being made.

Oh, and if you don't catch anything, the fish and chips at Margaritavill was AWESOME!!!  Washed it down with a slammin Mai-Tai to boot!

There have been some halis caught in that area lately but few and far between (per Bayside and Capitola boat rental reports and my free diving buddy) There is not any live bait for in the SC harbor as of Friday. If they get bait I may be up for Sunday at a reasonable hour 8am or so. It looks like there have been two small spots, Lighthouse point to mile bouy has been kicking out a few lager ones, Capitola has been kicking out a few smaller ones.

Hey,

About parking:  You can park on that ridge above the meters (up hill from the rail road tracks).  Two weekends ago I parked up there and wheeled my yak down.  Got Two flatties b/f noon on lures (one legal & one short) two Sundays ago.  I've fished the area a lot off boats but now w/ the yak it's much easier.  The only problem is that you have to wheel your yak all the way down the hill unless you have someone to watch your gear.  It's a safe area but it's hard not to trust strangers not to walk off w/ your gear, esp by brand new revo inshore.  Yeah, if you're down I'd love to meet you guys down on the water or even on the pier.  I personally like to launch off the pier, off the ramp.  Just makes things easier and I stay more dry, plus when the wind kicks up I like to toss lures off the pier anyways.  Later.

I know the parking on the ridge and its usually got some spots open early in the am. I have not launched off of the pier before, sounds like fun. Do they charge for launching off the pier?

I Just pull into the road to the pier, unload yak, drag about 20 yds to the water.
Then I drive up the hill. On the opposite side of the road the meters there are $1.00 per hour with a all day time limit.

I used $5 last time from 6 am to 10:30 am.

I am gonna try one more time there this weekend, if no luck, I'm heading south to monterey or hook up with someone going north of pidgeon, from now on ...i've been wanting to try some new places.

Guys,

I'm a newbie to the board, so let me first just say hello and thanks for all the posts and info. I live up above the cement ship and have been watching the water all week in preparation for launching this weekend. Swell is down, but winds have been coming up in the late morning - early afternoon and pushing a lot of manky water inshore. No clear signs of bait balls yet. The birds are kinda scattered and the annual arrival of the shearwaters is just starting, but they don't look focused. I'll keep my eyes open and hope to run into you out towards the kelp beds.

Cheers,
Robin

They don't charge anyone who just drops off their yak off the platform.  I'm sure they charge boaters who use the sling.  I really want to get into some WSB this trip and I hope they make a showing.  I'll fish till 1pm and call it quits.

I dorp off my big stuff on the beach, and park.  Carry my rods and paddle....never been olested yet.

Now the floating dock is out, you can dump your stuff near the bait shop, no one will mess with it.

Good idea, I think I'll do the same.  So I'm not quite sure who's in or not but I'll be there, that's a promise.  Take care and good luck.  Later.

I'll be there bright and early, leaving SJ around 5:30, plan to be there and ready to launch by 6:30 after getting some popsicles for butt bait.  Cya there!
