Hey Sean,

What kind of chickens did you get?  I am so looking forward to my first omelet.

The "chicken tractor"..

The chickens.. from left to right we have a barred rock, a gold sex-link, and an lavender araucana.

Brian:

Sweet tractor!  I absolutely suck at wood working so I looked into converting a doghouse, then I found out the local doghouse guy also makes small hen houses...I was thrilled to write the check and save myself many hours of frustration.

Our chickens are amercaunas...they are pretty much fledged at this point, but still small.  They move outside this weekend.  For now we are just going to let them run around the back yard and sleep in the henhouse, if that becomes an issue I'll make a coop around the hen house.

Also looking forward to the first eggs.

My wife actually didn't think I could make the coop and wanted to buy an Eglu.  Basically the I-Mac of portable chicken coops.

Well, I scoffed at the price and found myself having to build my own.   I still have all my fingers so I think it went well for my first construction project.

Mmmmmmmm! Yard bird!

Chickens for competition? Pets? 4H?

Raised them most of my life but the rule was that we never named them.... but I have a feeling these birds have names?

Hey Frank, I haven't personally named our chickens but the wife has.  I still refer to them by their breed names.   Anyway the plan is to keep the chickens for eggs as well as pets.  I imagine that Paige certainly has names for Sean's chickens.

Seen your birds at a number of competitions as well as the Seans. Still to this day I always make my way to live stock area at the fairs with the old 4H pledge in my head everytime.
I was raised around this enviroment as well as my children who loved fresh eggs in the morning and how we would prepare the non producers but I won't go there :smt004
It has always been a treasured memory for my girls. They just loved gathering eggs and being part of the nature of things.
Brought back some fond moments just seeing your birds.

Ours are sooOOOOooo named!  Pansy, Honey and Daisy.  Paige however FULLY understands the cycle of life.

Years ago we were on a multi family trip at Loon Lake when Paige was only 3.  A big group of kids were down at the shore fishing.  I heard a bunch of commotion and looked down to see one of the "city kids" with a trout flopping on the bank.  Before I got to them 8 year old Jelly had already dispatched the trout with a large rock.  By the time I arrived on the scene all of the kids were in a circle staring at the little fish.

The city kid asked "What do we do now?"
3 year-old Paige quickly answered "You stick a knife in his butt and take his guts out!"

I was momentarily horrified, then proud.  She is a going to be an amazing woman!
