Given the price of gas and commute costs I'm working on a combo public transporation-bike shuttle plan to ease the burden.  Was looking into folding bikes that would collapse and could be carried on bus/light rail.  While looking at the Dahon Folding Bicycle website I saw a few interesting photos of a folding bike being used as a kayak shuttle.  The link below takes you to the webpage, then look under the "Amateur Photos" section, there are 3 pictures of the bike hooked up to a kayak under the picture heading "Cantabria, Spain, O. Guinea".

Looks interesting, might be a good kayak shuttle option in some situations as the bike collapses and could be tied down in a tankwell.

Anybody have any experience with the performance or strength of these folding bikes in general? Thinking about one as a possible link in the "master commute plan".

Take care - Bird

This would be a good option for launching at Del Valle way down the dirt path, and the forebay as well

I remember seeing folding bikes years ago around the marina. Didn't think much of the bikes then...but now..hmm.

The Mariner model looks interesting.

Look at the Jack! WOW! And for $500 new is pretty darn reasonable.
Thanks for the link Bird, I've been meaning to get a bike since I moved.

Why not go for the electric folding bike for the added power??
I have a brand new one on CL for $300.

I know a few people with folding bikes and most like them.  Two main types, puny wheels and larger wheels.  The travel folks prefer the larger wheels but if you acutally commute and fold it up a lot, then the small wheels are much better.

may have to worry about water in the hubs however

Thanks guys.
Al - was looking at a few of the "cheaper" models in the urban class like the mariner and speed d7.
e2g - I know one guy who has one and he seems to like it for commuting around town - he's got the 20" wheels on it, might also check out that one model with the 16"ers as well.
Tote - interesting bikes, hadn't seen those, pretty cool. Seems like it could be a good option for the right situation. I'm thinking I need something simple and as light as possible.  Just have 2-3 miles on either end of a light rail/bus combo commute and need something light to carry on. The dahon models I was looking at weigh in around 24-25 lbs.
Thanks again everyone.
Best - Bird
