Well, I do see some calmer waters for tomorrow morning.

http://www.lajollasurf.org/nocal.html

there is a band of lower surf moving down the coast, followed by it going back up again. Also there is a building south swell.

If it is not foggy and this south swell is not big enough to surf, I am contemplating paddling way out there (it might be close to 3 miles?) to 150 feet deep and then trooching a big cannonball (12 oz?) on a threeway with a double hook whole squid in search of some coppers and vermillions.

any idiots want to try and find the reef out there with me? VHF, GPS and fish finder would be a requirement. Also, not for ocean newbs.

man that sounds tempting.  I gotta work out some kinks in my gear before I go out of Dav for uncharted reefs.  Need a little more water time, but dang that paddle does sound fun.

It looks like 2 miles to the 150 foot line.

well I am seeing more than 2 feet of open ocean south swell (which means 4-5 foot breakers) in the 18-14 second bands

here http://www.lajollasurf.org/ptreyes.html which means I am probably surfing tomorrow.

pm me if this kind of thing is something you want to try tho.

the surf was good today, a couple of feet over to almost double overhead a pleasure point. shoot for more water on higher tide with more water it was better. Crowd was less than favorable.....wanted to be out fishing, funny how that works I want to fish when I surf and surf when I fish. I have done both in one day, but it is a push. We should hook up sometime Jmarley. Solsrf1/Mike

Mike, I surfed today too.  It was crowded, but pretty consistent so I feel I got as much waves as I could handle.

We did the right thing today. this is a good swell. a swell this good always kills the shallow bite.

I will be launching from the west side of the harbour soon, I have rented a house in santa cruz, but it will mostly be a weekend thing, with the odd friday or monday squeezed in.

yeah, it would be interesting to plot it on google earth or something, just to see how far out you'd have to go.

it's at most a once-a-season kind of expedition, as once it's good inshore/shallow, who cares about the deep?

now how about the #'s for some of those refrigerator rocks out there in your backyard?  :smt003

I came across one last year, but darned if I could even find it again on the SAME DAY, it was so small!  :smt009

But those rocks must be marked on everybody's gps already anyways and hit pretty hard.
