I don't know if any of you fish this far south, but....
I launched at Gaviota State Park yesterday.  The first time this season.  The wind was blowing moderately offshore.  I was wondering if I should go or not because this area is known for howling offshore winds that you would never want to be caught in.  Upcoast I noticed a couple of other kayakers had launched before me, so I went for it.  I stayed close to the beach and bluffs so if the wind increased it would blow mostly over my head.  I paddled a couple of miles up off of the Hollister Ranch to some halibut grounds where I have had success before.  The wind died and it was calm, glassy, and warm.  I bounce balled in water from 20 to 60 feet deep for several hours, but there were no takers.  I suspect that the water is still too cool at 54 to 56 degrees according to the fishfinder.  I figure that the catching hasn't been too good since there were no power boats in the area all day.  There were a few dolphins around, some swimming a couple of feet under the kayak, and I felt like I was on the grey whale highway with eight or ten of them passing by during the day.
Not a bad day for a kayak fisherman.

Jim

Damn those temps look pretty good I wish the water up here was that warm.
