I drove down to take my son to UCSD and planned to rent a couple yaks and fish La Jolla.  It was my first time inshore fishing down there so I hit the Fred Hall show Friday eve to get some intel.  I talked to some guys about the bay fishing and they recommended San Diego Bay for Sand Bass and a possible Halibut.   I also met Jim Sammons and he said it was hit or miss in LJ.

Since it was windy and cold I rented a small skiff at Seaforth at Coronado.  I get there at 7 but the dang place opened at 8. What? Mission bay opens at 7.  Low tide was at 11 so I wanted moving water. Dang!  I motored to the point and we caught a bunch of bass drop shotting gulp shrimps.  They were all small so we headed for a sandy spot near some sailboats near the bridge.  My son hooks a small butt so we were hopefull.  I then hooked into a monster and had to chase it around.  Dang...  it was a huge Batray.  We make another drift and we hook into some keeper bass and croakers. Cool. Then my son hooks into a nice one and it turns out to be a 26" Hali!!  We had to keep that one for a Tempura dinner!!  Around noon the bite died and wind came up so we ended it with a half day trip.

Not a bad place to fish!!  Next time it's La jolla for some YT I hope.

I grew up fishing those spots... and Mission bay.   Your report sure is making me anxious to get out on my yak!

Lucky me, finals are next week and I'll have a few weeks before next term starts during which I hope to get out a few times.

What was I thinking?  two kids under 4 years, working on two simultaneous graduate degrees, and working full time.   If I don't get my yak wet soon I'm going to go nuts.

Dave -

My son also goes to school at UCSD. We should hookup for some La Jolla kelp action this fall.
