I got an email from a guide in Idaho. He is primarily a big game guide. He is done for the season, so his summers are spent fishing.

His email talked about the salmon season. Since removing some dams on the Snake River, the salmon are now making it up the Salmon River in Idaho. In fact there are stretches of river that are now seeing salmon for the first time in over 20 years. The stretch between shoup and the town of salmon has a season for the first time in over 15 years.

For those that don't know where I am talking about, here is a short version of the river system...

The salmon go up the Columbia River between Washington and Oregon to the Idaho Border, then to the Snake River and up to the Salmon River, it is better than 800 miles from the Ocean.

This is good news for sure, but it also brings a question to mind. With this treck there is a large mortality rate, so ... If the Salmon are endangered, then why are they seeing record numbers in Idaho?

I'm not a fish expert, so there may be a reasonable explanation for this phenom, but is was curious to me.
