Well my kid's hockey team just made the state finals, and they're held down in Encinada (just north of San Diego) I've never been fishing down there, but I'm planning on bringing the yaks also and spend a couple days on the ocean. I was hoping to pump some info from the board about fishing down there. Areas, to launch and fish, what to expect what to try for, what to bring etc... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Contacts?
Thankx, Jonesz

If you are staying in the North County area, the launch at Cardiff State Beach is very convenient.  The surf is usually mellow there.  The kelp is thick right now and you may have good luck with the halibut in that area.  There is lots of sandy bottom adjacent to hard bottom and/or kelp.  La Jolla is only a 20-25 minutes south of Encinitas (non-rush hour) and will give a greater of variety of bottom structure to fish.  The water is just starting to warm up down here, sometimes creeping into the low 60's.

Gear

12-15# bass rod and your favorite plastics (Cardiff, maybe La Jolla if you want to target calicos in the kelp and off the rocks)
your preferred halibut setup (Cardiff and La Jolla north the pier or along the kelp line, you'll have easy access to 20-60' sandy bottom)
25-30# to troll mackerel (maybe Cardiff, normal MO at La Jolla, maybe use a 2 ounce egg)
rockfish gear (La Jolla, fish the edge of the canyons, which drop off to 1000+'  in a very short drift)
sabiki if you want to catch live fin bait, maybe a squid jig*
check the "no fishing" La Jolla Ecological Reserve Boundaries is you decide to fish there
* La Jolla has just come off a huge squid spawn, and fish may still be keyed on the squid, people are still jigging up some live, fresh dead/dropper loop maybe a good call

Good Luck
