I've found the stock Hawaiian single floppers aren't that great for shooting fish against rocks though, you need more penetration beyond the back of the fish with that type of point.  I'd recommend a threaded shaft and a couple different points.  You can also get a shorter shaft to make the gun effectively shorter for murky north-coast situations.

I have to disagree - the single flopper shafts are my favorite by far.  Just need to pay more attention to shot placement/angle.  I've never lost a fish up here because the shaft hit a rock and didn't penetrate through.

There are a few competition divers who like using the threaded shafts with a 5-prong, but that's strictly close range or hole hunting.  On longer shots, its flat surface tends to plane the shaft in one direction.

One last thought - the Omer you have does have the longest flopper in the industry.  Perhaps a shorter flopper would help the learning curve.  :smt002

So true....Angel usually misses the first shot and just beats his perch into submission with the stalk.  I can't comment on the in-accuracy of the gun though...angel misses with both his jbl and his pole spear so I think we can chalk that one up to both his glass eye and hook for a hand.

I'm no gun snob and I definetely need some target practice but I don't own a jbl and unlike Art I don't mistake a black and yellow for a lingcod :smt003

I have a 75CM Hammerhead Evolution that has treated me well so far.

LOL nice try, I seen the ling cruise in there, was about a 22"

I bought a 70cm Rob Allen then a 90 cm hammerhead.........I shoulda went with another Rob Allen  :smt011

What is it about the Rob Allen that makes you prefer it to the Evolution?

RA has been a reliable rock solid fish taking machine with no modifications necessary since the day it came off the diveshop wall.  I would probably swap out the closed muzzle for an open if I were to get a longer model but its not an issue on the shortie.

HH has not been. Numerous issues that I'm sure have been cleared up with the newer models.  Angle's is nice and the production quality seems a notch above mine.  His has worked well for him, I might have gotten the bad apple.

If you would like, bring it by Wallins and we'll take care of it for you. let us know what the problem is and we'll give you a good solution. Kevin is a great guy and he stands behind his products and Im sure he would have it no other way. Wallins is a Hammerhead dealer.

With spearguns there is nothing worse than having one out with a Customer and having it perform less than perfect. User safety is always a concern as well.

I'll be there on Saturday all day if you want to come by and we'll work something out.

John

A 75 cm euro gun is all I shoot on the north coast as well.  Lots of fish have died with that gun.  I love the euro gun because it is light, very manueverable and makes you practice aiming, which comes in handy when you start hunting blue water fish with a break away tip.  Dennis at 20Fathoms.com sells a nice 75 cm euro gun too.

So what I'm hearing is that I should have probably waited before recently purchasing my JBL 24". I am just starting out and thought I was getting a pretty good deal on a brand new model never used for 75.00. I will take all of this great info into consideration while working out the bugs and then upgrade. Question on tips; breakaway or single or dual flapper style? Thanks Mike

Single flopper.  The good thing about JBL's  - they hold their market price pretty decently.  Learn with it & if you feel the need, upgrade later.   :smt001
