Hope this can help some of you guys. It's a very simple and very straight-forward install, but here is a step by step with pictures

STEP 1

Choose mounting location. I chose where it would go if I had bought the angler edition. This is a practical spot for me anyways since I will be mounting my fishfinder below it.

STEP 2

Layout all your tools. Best to do it before you start so you are not frantically searching for one you didn't have ready.

Tools Needed

Drill
.250" drill bit
round file or burr whip
scribe
Loctite
allen wrench (I'll get the size soon)
wrench to hold nut on backside (I'll get the size soon)

Hardware Needed (It is not included with the rod holder)

x4 - 1/4"x1" long stainless steel allen bolt
x4 - 1/4-20 stainless nylock nuts
x4 - 1/4" stainless washers

STEP 3

Get the rod holder base perfectly aligned and use scribe to outline the outside of each hole.
MAKE SURE BASE DOES NOT MOVE OR YOUR HOLES WONT LINE UP AFTER YOU DRILL!

STEP 4

I then use a small metal ruler to scribe to mark an X in each hole to find center of hole.

(use a Sharpie or pen to get ink into scribe line to make it easier to see. Wipe away excess ink, leaving ink into the scribe line)

STEP 5

Use crosshatch in each scribed hole to align the point of the drillbit up for a perfectly centered hole.

Start drill slowly so the bit doesn't walk and you end up drilling somewhere where you don't want to. It propably would be a good idea to use a center punch or something similar.

STEP 6

Use round file or burr whip to clean the edges of the hole so the allen bolts will fit smoothly.

Perfect fit

STEP 7

After cleaning all residual plastic from drilling, add a small amount of Loctite to each allen bolt.

Then insert each allen bolt into the rod holder base.

Install each flat washer and nylock nut by hand.

Use wrench to hold nylock nut and tighten each allen bolt snug using allen wrench.

Finished Product

Install time was about ten minutes from start to finish.

Feel free to ask any questions

First off, that is a great step-by-step, Jeff! Thanks for taking the time to take the pics and describe the process.

I initially installed the same deck/side mount Scotty base in the exact same spot. But when I transport my kayak, it is upside down on the crossbars (thule style bars), and the Scotty base would rub on the roof of my car. Because the Scotty base was now the highest point of my yak.
This might not be a problem for all cars; maybe mine just has less space between the crossbars and the roof.
So I ended up replacing the deck/side Scotty base for a flush-mounted Scotty. No real biggie, just something to consider for people that transport their kayak upside down on the roof.

Thanks again,
PK

Nice step by step.  I notice that your holes are fairly tight but I would have added a bead of Marine Goop or similar high quality sealant to make sure the screw holes are sealed.

Agree w/ sakyack about the marine goop. It's a total just in case but our yaks flex so if our mounts aren't sealed water penetration can become a problem. Love the round file by the way. Where do you pick up one of those?
