As far as I am concerned, if you can't self rescue you have no business being out on water over your head. Particularly if fishing solo.

What do you mean by "water over your head."  Is that a head-high measurement from a seated position, which would translate to a 3-5 foot swell?

I'll volunteer to do a real test at Lexington, New Brighton, and Bean Hollow if someone wants to set up the proper safety protocol for it.  And I want at least two other people to do it with me, just so we can get a good sample.  By proper safety protocol, I mean a cadre of at least 8 nearby boats ready to yank us out if I go under, everyone armed with VHF.

Granted, I'm an OK swimmer (my alcatraz PR swim is 35:18) but somewhat deconditioned right now.  So I'm not sure where I'd fall on the spectrum for population fitness.  Considering myself representative of the average yakster physically, we'll need a real beer belly and a super aqua jock to round out the trio.  Who's game?  C'mon all you wader-philes, time to sack up.

Meaning you can't stand on the bottom with your head above water.

Understood.
