I thought this was interesting. I was at the aquarium last November and remember seeing this fish.

Half-ton sunfish euthanized at Monterey Bay Aquarium
Bay City News Service
Article Launched: 02/14/2008 05:09:16 PM PST

MONTEREY - The largest sunfish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium was euthanized this morning because of failing health.

The 1,247-pound fish, known by its scientific name Mola mola, had stopped eating during the past week and was increasingly unable to swim in the aquarium's million-gallon Outer Bay exhibit, according to aquarium officials.

The fish had been at the aquarium since September 2005 and had grown from an initial size of 22 inches long and less than 20 pounds in weight to 6 feet 7 inches long and a weight of more than half a ton.

A smaller sunfish remains in the aquarium's Outer Bay exhibit.

So I wonder if they sent the fish to the fish market up the street?

Sad to hear it died. :smt010

That's an amazing growth rate.  I wonder how that compares with other big fish.

We were last month.  It was truly an incredible fish, probably the most memorable of the fish in the exhibits.

Guess if it grew that fast, the other one in there should fill in for it soon enough.  I generally don't encourage folks to go to the aquarium anyway.  If the want to see fish, I'll show em fish.   :smt077
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

Amazing growth rate, I wonder if they are feeding it too much.  I don't think this is the first time this has happened to them.  I heard last time they had to use a helicopter to release the fish back in to the ocean.
