I am going to be in South Lake Tahoe Sat-Mon March 1-3. Anyone else being dragged away by skiing friends that weekend?
Anyone got any yakking suggestions?
How long will it take me to catch hypothermia?
Should I just stick to the charters?:smt069
Or stay at home in front of the fire?

Alright, clearly no-one else is going to be around, but can any of you folks help with some basic advice for a newbie (to Lake Tahoe as well as to kayak fishing)?

All I really want to know is: can I actually fish Tahoe, or nearby (non-frozen) lakes in early March wearing 3mm of neoprene and a few extra layers on top? In a yak with leaky stoppers? I don't mind being cold, but I could do without actually dying of hypothermia.

I was thinking of going to Fallen Leaf.

All advice gratefully received.

I've only fished the area once and that time happened to be at fallen leaf.  It's a beautiful lake but when I was there it was a bit windy and cold (no worry of hypothermia though) and there was really no where to park...good thing the guy I spoke to was nice enough to let us park in the driveway.  We fished for a couple of hours with no bites.

I hope you have a good time and find the fish there, I'd really like to go back.

NB-

I don't know what part of the lake you intend to fish but, Tahoe has been pretty tough to fish lately. The bite is sllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooow right now... The charter boats seem to be having a hard time getting fish as well. But, for what it's worth, you can totally fish it without dying. If you have breathable waders, I'd wear those instead of a wetsuit. Just layer up under the waders and you should be okay. In a wetsuit, you'll probably start to sweat and that's not good. You're just asking for hypo to set in. March is a good time to topline for some big bows and macks. Although, the macks seem to be holding pretty deep lately... like 140-200 feet deep. Dragging minnows, plugs or jigging may get you some action. If you have a fishfinder, bring it... as soon as you mark fish... stop and jig. You won't get anything really big, but you'll get something. If the wind is up... stay in front of the fire. That lake is outrageously dangerous when the winds start blowing. As for Fallenleaf, I'm not too sure but I think that you'll have an harder time fishing there than on Tahoe.

Hope this helps you with your decision making...

Thanks a lot guys, that's a big help. I think I'll make a last minute call based upon the weather forecast.

Freddie: it's funny you say the bite is slow right now, because the charter boat i booked said the fishing had been outstanding, and it's not like a charter boat captain to exaggerate now is it.........

Fallen leaf lake, is a beautiful lake, but as mentioned, there is no parking along the road in.  It's basically a narrow 1 lane road with driveways.  Only real parking is at the marina at the end of the road. Not sure if it's public, though, when I visited the lake a few yrs back we parked and launched and ended up paying a launch fee.  Wasn't bad.  Was end of summer then.  Didn't fish, just enjoyed the lake from the kayaks.
