Drifted the American River Late Friday (2/1) afternoon from 1400-dusk from Sunrise to below Rossmoor (Gilligans Island) and dawn-1000 on Saturday morning (2/2) from El Manto to Gilligans. Beautiful warm afternoon on Friday with nice sunset (pic 1). Cold, gray, drizzly morning on Saturday in front of the storm (other pics).  River has been running low at about 1050 cfs for months with controlled flows from Folsom/Nimbus, 3-4 ft visibility at the current time following the recent rains.

Targeting steelhead - fished roe under a float, plugs and spoons. No hook-ups, saw 4 rollers/jumpers. The other drift boats and bankies I passed also reported no hook-ups from that stretch.

Of possible interest, there has been a petition submitted for an emergency low-flow closure for the AR from Feb-March to the F&G commission - they are to consider iit during their early feb meeting. Several threads and discussion on the FishSniffer if anybody wants more info.

Take care - Bird

Nice to hear somebody getting out on the AR. The last time I went out there was in December. I hit Sara Court area for nada but, I did see a couple of guys with fish. That was the hottest I've seen it out there all season. I may get a chance to get out there this week if work treats me well. If not, maybe give Folsom Pond a try.

Nice picts John, its been awhile since I fished up there. I guess you ran San Juan? Let me know if it heats up the Russians running 16,000 :smt013
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

very nice! :smt004
I wish I could join you, but I was putting over times (we had ok #s fish, so it's good thing)...  I casted out a few times before work at Yuba, but the water was very very milky. :smt012  Maybe, next week when it all calms down...

Freddie - I hope to get out later this week but depends on work - let me know if you get a chance and are interested in hooking-up. Definitely will get out one afternoon next week. Good luck if we don't cross paths.

Mike - will keep in touch. I skirt thru San Juan at these flows by staying to the extreme left riffle when coming down stream (the right side in the picture looking upstream).  Looking forward to the RR coming back in!

Naoaki - hope we can hook-up some time here in the future.

Take care - Bird

I read somewhere that it was a major flyfishing organization that submitted the petition...something about preventing easy snagging of steelhead.

Not all reports need pics of fish to be good ones!, but it does make them easier to type!
Never BEEN there or DONE that, but at least I know what it looks like when I get there now....SWEET!
