Space is gonna be an issue, its camping for the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival at the Mendo Co. Fairgrounds.  I've been told that they pack vehicles in tight, the comparison I got was that the lot looks similar to the Oakland Colloseum mid tailgating time.  My thoughts were that I could throw up the tent in the truck then throw up a 10x10 Sun tent mini-lounge headquarters in the space I don't use.  I'm entertaining the idea of getting a regular tent but right now they don't seem optimal.

That festival has camping space available in an adjoining area. They ask that you limit tent size to 10 feet by 10 feet, which is bigger than most tents. Any of the above suggestions will easily fit:

For that kind of camping, here's another suggestion:
Bring a big tarp or roll of indoor-outdoor carpet for ground cover. I had a roll
of indoor-outdoor carpet that became a cherished truck camping accessory
while driving though baja a few times.

that is one thing that makes truck camping much easier, a semi-clean floor
that can be swept etc. (yeah, bring a broom).

a couple big cots and a roll of groundcover weigh a ton, but if you aren't
backpacking you have a lot more options.

I'm considering one of those RV shades that pull out. I've seen them mounted
on the side of roof racks. I'd put mine on my ladder rack. instant porch.
with some groundcover and cots, that is a pretty serious base camp for
something like a baja expedition to less fished and travelled areas.

Chicks don't dig camper shells.

Brah, you are SOOOOO wrong there!!!
We stay in mine all the time. Beats getting a hotel a lot of times. Sometimes we even use the hotel parking lot!
When you arrive somewhere around midnight and are up at 6AM to kayak it doesn't make much sense to spend your time or money doing it any other way.
Nice futon in the back with zip together sleeping bags is the ideal situation. Park, crawl in and you are good to go.

when I had my GMC 1500, we had a bed with storage boxes in the back.  we even had lights and curtains, it was sweet, but with the Dakota I really like having the bed to put my junk in...

but I may get another shell eventually 'cause you can basically sleep anywhere :smt002

Maybe I need to start trolling for them in Placerville then cause the San Jose stock is a different breed.

I know this is an old thread, but as I was looking around at all kinds of tents, I found this truck tent from Cabelas'.  I realize truck tents have advantages and disadvantages, but this one has lots of good reviews, for anyone interested:
