I've been trolling around considering other jobs and came across an opening I'm qualified for in Daphne, AL. It looks like a nice town, right on Mobile Bay, low crime, educated populace, and reasonably priced homes. But, I've only ever lived in the south while I was in the military (North Carolina) so I thought I would ask if anybody knows anything about this area. Is it as nice as web sites are portraying it?

The job is with US Fish and Wildlife so I figure I'd have a good line on where to fish!  :smt003

You ARE going to visit the area before you take the job. Right? Job interview and the whole nine yards? I'm originally from Mississippi and can safely say that I would never ever live anywhere in Mississippi or Alabama. It's essentially small town life. Even the cities there feel like small town atmosphere with the whole Peyton Place mentality. But don't get me wrong...many city folks move there specifically for the slower pace of living. It would be nice if your going there on a West Coast salary...then you would have it made. Fishing and hunting wise, however, you would love it. You're right next to the Gulf of Mexico, where you can even catch blackfin tuna from a yak. Just be careful at the beaches though. Bull sharks are well established in that part fo the Gulf.

Thanks for the info Howard. It's funny you mention city people moving there because my wife and I are really small town people who moved to the Bay Area in 2005 just to be a little adventurous and see if we liked big city living. After 3 years, we've learned that we can deal with city living, but we really miss the small towns we used to live in since we aren't into nightlife or huge shopping opportunities.
We really prefer the ability to get out and easily find our own little piece of the bay/forest/desert/etc. As far as salary, I'm a federal employee and living in the Bay Area is rough even with a cost of living adjustment. My pay would be basically the same no matter where I'm at.
But tuna from a yak!  :smt007

Forgot to mention that married people would enjoy living in a small town atmosphere much more than single people.

Also, Mobile Bay may be one of the safest places to live now that the once-a-century disaster (Hurricane Katrina) has occurred. Surely, lightning can't strike twice?! Living near the Gulf, you can also try angling for some alligator gar...just be sure to wear your Kevlar armor.
