Nice report!

Janice, you can run 10lb line (or heck 30lb braid) to the dodger, then between 3 and 6 lb line after the dodger to the hook.

you'll lose the attractor much less this way.  at least that is what I did and it seemed to work for me.

You ROCK big J !!
I was "the OTHER ken" but now I am "ken fishnfool"...we met at the Del Valle camping trip...I was out Saturday with some friends in our tube and I got a big SKUNK! It was soooooo much better before the storm!
You might want to head more for the dam if you want trout. They have been doing much better this last week in clearer water. The bigger fish seem to prefer meat (nightcrawlers) so your setup should work!

I hope to see you out there again soon and I'll save another Boddingtons Ale for you.

Beatifull pic's!!!
Keep it up!

I was trolling close to the shoreline 8'-15' so I have to learn how deep the dodger dives because I had more snags than usual (even before the fatal one!).

I can't help with the FISH part of it, but.....
Here I go with what I found out about "How the hell, can I tell, the depth of the lure, w/o a down rigger?"
Items Needed~ F.F., way to determine speed(gps) and a long stretch of level/consistant depth below.
*1~ you have to determine what SPEED you are going to troll at and try to keep it consistant during the TEST PERIOD. * rule of thumb is 1mph trolled/for every inch of the lure used(3in.lure=3mph)roughly.
I always use TWO POLES, keeping the deeper one on the OUTSIDE/furthest from shoreside of the yak and the shallower on the INSIDE/closest to shore.

*2~Once you see a consistant, DESIRED DEPTH of the fish, get all set up with your pole/s in thier holders, in READY to DEPLOY mode.

*3~ Get paddling faster then your determined TROLL SPEED,...open bail or ?,....paddle a few hard times, while watching your lines roll out....paddle a couple times, I hold BOTH spools/or lock it, so that the falling lures can CATCH UP to your speed.
DON'T LET TOO MUCH LINE OUT... so that you'll not be able to react and "get some back before it STRIPS it BARE!"  I let out about lessthan< 1/2 the spool(reel capacity varies with test size)
I treat both poles the same when letting out the lines, that way they won't be crossing and tangling each other.

OK...WE are going a "steady" 3mph.....I'm@30ft.....Keep your eyes "GLUED" to the deeper one......
if it's not BOUNCING HARD, it's not hitting bottom.....find 25ft., keeping your eyes on the tip and maintaining your speed.
Do YOU SEE the FUN COMING?   do you see what I'm refering to?
as soon as the deeper one HITS BOTTOM once! you'll know the depth that it's runnig at.
Reel in a couple of times if shorter detph is needed...slowing and speeding during troll can effect the depth also.

if you are planning a hard turn to GO BACK OVER A SPOT? ...ALWAYS turn to the deeper lures side!!
if you don't the deeper one will cross the shallower and you'll have a bonified mess to deal with.

this may HELP or HINDER your efforts from here on out Janice! :smt044
as for the lack of the GPS and knowing what speed you paddling?
Yak models will vary in speed and efforts but.....
1 med. paddle stroke.....count to 2.3.4 seconds and stroke on the 5count.....234,stroke on 5! will put you around 1mph

1 stroke every 3 second will get about 2mphs

a constant comfortable effort paddle will put you around 3mph.

yeah.....iSPENTaLOTofTIMEonTHISstudy! can you tell?  hope it helps somebody!

Man, that is a lot of info to digest - and very good info at that.  I think I understood it all. :smt004  Definitely seems easier to do with a GPS.

Speaking of GPS, I need to figure out how to use it for more than just tracking my MPH.  I swear it is smarter than I am. :smt009   We'll save that for another thread.

Wow! Thanks, Adam, for the info! I've often wondered how fast I'm paddling, fishing or not, but didn't know how to gauge it because I STILL haven't taken the time to learn to use my handheld GPS. :smt009 I'm sure others will find your technique helpful, too!

usually the speed part of the hand-held gps is the simplest thing, just turn it on and usually the display that shows you where you are going has a speed display.

you can save learning the navigating part of it all for some other day.

in some sense, you only need to borrow it a few times cause once you have paddled around at 1.3 mph, you get a feeling for that speed and you don't need the gps so much anymore.

with wind it's a different story, you can go > 1.3 just being blown along. and then going upwind it feels like you must be going 5 mph, but the gps tells the true story: 0.8,  :smt010.

anyways, speed display with the GPS is the simplest use and does not require any manual reading.
