Here are my thoughts... I agree with John that for trolling or drifting live bait, any rod with a stiff butt section will do. The lighter the line you are fishing the slower the action of the rod you want IMO. The advantage of high end rods like Loomis rods are their ability to cast artificials. I save my Loomis rods for casting artificials, for trolling or drifting live bait I use St Croix SCIII rods which are slower action and much less costly.

Hey Pat, just looking through old threads and found this one.  What did you end up getting?  Just curious.

I'm in the market for a trout trolling rod.  I have 2 ultralight rods but want something just a tad heavier when dragging flashers or dodgers.

Michael,

Too bad we didn’t hook up at Del Valle, I would have shown you my new (for New Melones) trout trolling rig.

I got A Shimano Tekota Linecounter TEK300LC Trolling Reel, 4.2:1 with a St. Croix Premier PC76LM Graphite, 7’6”, Lite Power, Moderate Action, strung with Spectra Power Pro Microfilament Line.  8 lb. test, with 6’ of 6 lb. fluorocarbon leader.  It worked great on the trout that I caught at NM.

If we can hook up at Del Valle before you buy something, you can check it out.

Sounds great Grizz, I'd love to take a look at it.  If you don't mind me asking, what did the entire package set you back?  Where did you end up getting it?

Thanks,

Michael

Michael,

The reel was $159.99 and the rod was $88.99    Walton’s Pond
               14837 Washington Ave
               San Leandro
               (510) 352-3932

I’m probably going to buy a duplicate rig for the second stamp.

Michael sorry for not getting back to you sooner just saw your entry. I ended up with two Lamiglas MBC 702 UL Kokanee Specials for Trout trolling love them as for live bate I have not decided yet maybe at the sportsman show this weekend. Good luck on your search.
