Once you have the fish in range, gaff it...if it pulls strong, let the gaff go and it will pull the jug out of the rear.....just like what they did in the movie "Jaws"

  It might be fun to test this concept out on a few big bat rays.  Can you picture your float zinging and bobbing along while you paddle your ass off to keep up with it.
