I took a non yaking serious fisherman buddy with me and let him use my Tarpon 130 while I used the search 15. We got on the water around 8 am and it was foggy. We found a spot where they were biting and my buddy caught three trout quickly. I kept getting hit and losing fish. My buddy said my hook was too big and dull and gave me a smaller and sharper hook. I switched over and the bite stopped.

We split up and he caught two more and a LMB that he estimated at about 4lbs. We left around 4pm with 5 trout and left the bass. I saw a guy in a SIK catch one trout on the troll and then he left. I think my buddy caught all his trout on white power eggs. I got all my hits on pink powerbait (about 5 or 6 years old).

Thank you for sharing. Fishing in Amador has been frustrating to me knowing the big trout yet to be caught be me.

I would be interested in finding out what will work in kayak fishing for trout at Amador, if it is not a guarded secret. Do you spot fish in the fishfinder, then drop your power egg in a Carolina rig and fishing vertically? Do you do any trolling with your bait at all? I heard some people fly line powerbait. Last week I used the wigglefin with grub or nightcrawler at Quarry Lake but I did not get any bite. I guess I did not get to the right depth.

I spoke with Laurie at Amador yesterday.

Here is what I put in the Sentinel Report:

In the meantime, if an angler does not mind a bit of travel, Lake Amador in Ione, just east of Stockton, is going gangbusters right now. The water level is low, but they have stocked an additional 6,000 pounds of rainbow and steelhead trout in the lake this week. These fish average 2.5 to 5 pounds each, and bring the total planting numbers since October up to 57,500 pounds. The lake has recently turned over, so fishing from the bank is productive, though manger Laurie Lockhart recommends using a kayak or “belly-boat” to present white or black flies, Rapala lures or her favorite the “Big Mac,” a combination of nightcrawler and power bait these big fish find irresistible.

(She suggest top 5 feet of water, lightest weight possible, inflate your nightcrawler so it floats, use a little ball of power bait)

Allen,

Thank you so much for sharing. Fly lining the "big mac" looks really good if the fish is on top water. But has to be watch out of all the trolling traffic at Amador. Now Rockcod season is over. I am trying to get the trout trolling thing down this winter before the spring bass kicks in.

Hey Fishbear:

I am planning to get up there for some trout as well, maybe right after xmas festivities and such.

I will post on the hookups forum when plans crystallize.  Maybe you can show me how to catch a trout.

Fished Amador twice last month.  Caught a couple nice ones on a F7 rapala in firetiger, but the hot bait was a white grub toplined.  Lots of short strikes.  They aren't kidding about the low water level!  Also, it's a bit of a circus with all the boat traffic on weekends.  I had a guy cut right behind me in a bass boat, taking a quarter of my spool with my rapala.   :smt011  Still a good bet for trout right now though.

We used powerbait with a splitshot under a bober. We cast in front of the brush that is sticking out of the water and caught fish.

Amphibian,

Good tips. I have not thought about trout behaving like bass that needs shelter. I will definitely give it a try next time.

Hi Allen. If I get back from L.A. in time, maybe I'll meet you up there. I usually have good luck trailing a black grub with chartreuse curly tail on 8 lb test line and 4 lb test leader. Usually chilly in the morning but when the sun shines, it's a great lake to float on.

Cool, Howard PK  says he may have a shot as well.

It would be great to fish with you, esp if you know how to catch trout which is something that usually eludes me (need more practice)
